McElwee, widow of the late Matthew McElwee and mother of Albert McElwee, treasurer of Fountain County, died Monday morning, February 25, at 3:00 o'clock at her home in Jackson Township, just west of Wallace. Death was caused by the infirmities of old age. Mrs. McElwee was born at Bridgeport, Ohio, July 5, 1833, but she moved to this county when yet a small girl and had lived here practically all her life. She was married fifty-seven years ago to Matthew McElwee and to this union nine children were born, five daughters and four sons. Her daughters who survive... Read More	"Mary A. McElwee, widow of the late Matthew McElwee and mother of Albert McElwee, treasurer of Fountain County, died Monday morning, February 25, at 3:00 o'clock at her home in Jackson Township, just west of Wallace. Death was caused by the infirmities of old age. Mrs. McElwee was born at Bridgeport, Ohio, July 5, 1833, but she moved to this county when yet a small girl and had lived here practically all her life. She was married fifty-seven years ago to Matthew McElwee and to this union nine children were born, five daughters and four sons. Her daughters who survive her are: Mrs. Katharine Tinder, of Kingman, Mrs. Phoebe Cartwright of Veedersburg; and Mrs. John Davis of Wallace. She is also survived by her four sons: David McElwee of near Hillsboro; Oscar, who lives on the old home place; Albert, now treasurer of Fountain County and John. These together with eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends are left to mourn her departure. Funeral services were held from the Lutheran church, one mile east of Wallace Wednesday morning at 10:00 o'clock. The Rev. Stoddard of Indianapolis was in charge of the services and preached the funeral sermon. The aged body was laid to rest in the old Lutheran cemetery alongside that of her husband, who had preceded her in death quite a number of years. Mrs. McElwee was a characteristic pioneer woman enduring hardship without complaint. SHe was a homemaker and her greatest joy was her children. She was a good neighbor and her motherly advice to her own and also to the young folks who frequented her home was always well directed and added much to the better citizenship of our county. She has gone, but her good influences will abide for years to come."
