She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth and attended school at St. Mary’s Catholic School through the eighth grade. HARLAN NEWS-ADVERTISER FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2014 PAGE 10A REMEMBRANCE Mary Ann Blum, 84 Feb. 11, 1930 - Sept. 26, 2014 HARLAN –– Mary Ann Blum was born on February 11, 1930, to Nicholas and Anna Barbara (Kloewer) Springman, near Portsmouth. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth and attended school at St. Mary’s Catholic School through the eighth grade. August 9, 1948, Mary Ann was united in marriage to Vincent Blum at St. Mary’s. There were fourteen children born to this union: Ben, Barbara, Jerry, Mary, Joan, Jean, Roger, Delores, Lois, Sheila, Dean, Karen, Lisa, and Angela. Mary Ann was devoted to raising and caring for her family, God, and the community. She enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers, and cooking and baking for her family as well as helping her husband on the farm. She was a member of the St. Boniface Rosary Society and the Quilting Bee Association and spent many hours sewing and quilting. After her husband’s death in 2011, Mary Ann became a resident of Little Flower Haven nursing home in Earling and then moved to Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan. She died on Friday, September 26, 2014 having attained the age of eighty-four years, seven months, and fifteen days. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents and husband Vincent. She is survived by her children: Ben Blum and his wife Carol of George, Barbara Malik of Harlan, Jerry Blum and his wife Nancy of Pacific Junction, Mary Ohlinger of Omaha, NE, Joan and her husband Dave Tweedie of Lincoln, NE, Jean and her husband Norman Smith of Dunlap, Roger Blum and his wife Teresa of Hastings, Delores and her husband Tom Huey of Harlan, Lois Reeves of Harlan, Sheila and her husband Nick May of Westphalia, Dean Blum of Harlan, Karen and her husband Dan Jones of Council Bluffs, Lisa and her husband Rodney Bengford of Harlan, and Angela and her husband Warren Bertsch of Papillion, NE; thirty-four grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; sisters: Frances and her husband Raymond Anastasi and Helen and her husband Edward Miller all of Portsmouth, and Theresa Blum of Harlan; brothers: Nick Springman, Jr., Joe Springman and his wife Arlene, and Donald Springman and his wife Mary all of Portsmouth; other family members and friends. Rev. David Smith, S.J. celebrated the 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial with Concelebrant Rev. John Frost on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. Music was provided by Ron and Maria Rosman. Honorary casket bearers were Nicholas Springman, Jr., Joseph Springman, Donald Springman, Edward Miller, Raymond Anastasi, and Fr. Benedict Kenkel. Serving as casket bearers were Kalem Malik, Phillip May, Jeffery Blum, Bryon Blum, Rodney Bengford, Matt Blum, David Blum, and Rodger Blum. Burial was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia. . .
