David Erdman, officiating. Burial was in the Ideal Cemetery. Mary Ann (Mrs. Jakie) Gross died in Sioux Falls at the Avera Heart Hospital this past Thursday at age 83 following a brief illness. Mary Ann was born on March 17, 1930 in Yale to Jake and Justina Stahl. She grew up on a farm near Yale and graduated from Yale High School in 1948-she was Homecoming Queen! While in high school she met the guitar-playing Jakie Gross, who came down from North Dakota, serenading his way into her heart. They were wed on June 9, 1948 and settled down to raise a family on a farm near Yale. They moved to Huron in 1966 and she remained in her house on Iowa Avenue until her death. Mary Ann was a devoted wife and loving mother. Being a farm girl, she was no stranger to hard work. She knew how to run a household and kept things clean and neat. Through the years, she and Jakie enjoyed countless hours with friends and family playing cards or dominos and visiting. In later years they took daily walks around the neighborhood, a tradition she continued after Jakie's death. Helping others, be it with a phone call, a visit, a plate of cookies or sharing something from the garden, was second nature to her. Speaking of cookies, her baking skills were legendary. Her family was treated to an endless supply of kitchen aromas as homemade buns, doughnuts, caramel rolls, cookies, pies and cakes were available. The apricot-laced "filling" cookies were fought over by kids and grandkids alike. Hearing Grandma coming up the stairs with goodies from the basement freezer was reason for smiles. The Christmas carolers from church were often welcomed by homemade mouth-watering caramel candies. Even though her 3 children and the grandchildren were not nearby, she managed to keep in touch with them on the phone, with cards, as well as the occasional and much-valued "care" package. Without grandkids near, she and Jakie would "adopt" youngsters at Mount Olivet; doing babysitting and having a whole new clientele for her baking. After Jakie died in 2001, she adapted to her new life well, keeping connected with many friends, as well as flying out of state for three of her grandchildren's weddings. Mary Ann lived her faith. Although she wasn't eloquent, her actions spoke volumes. She came to faith in Christ as a young person and was baptized at the Hutterthal Church of Carpenter. Having a relationship with Christ was the bedrock of her life and she never faltered. She loved her church family and she loved reading her Bible every morning. In her Bible was a note with the words of Philippians 4:6, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God". Another note had Jeremiah 29:11 underlined, "For I know the thoughts I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end". She is survived by two sisters; Carol Walter and her husband DeWayne of Yale and Liz Hofer and her husband Melroy of Springfield; son Perry and his wife Beth of Atlanta, daughter Colleen Aguirre and her husband Carl of Denver, son Ken and his wife Brenda of Bakersfield, California; 7 grandchildren: Peter Gross and his wife Marci and T J Gross and his wife Briana of Atlanta, Justina Aguirre of Denver, Michael Gross, Heidi Vohnout and her husband Dave, Jonathan Gross and Daniel Gross, all of Bakersfield; and 3 great-grandchildren: Sara Beth, Katelyn, and Shelby Gross of Atlanta. She is mourned also by 3 sisters-in-law; Viola Gross of Worthington, Ruth Gross and Verna Gross of Huron, as well as other relatives, including nieces and nephews and a host of friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Jakie, her parents, a sister Morine, a brother Pyrle, and a granddaughter Ashley.
