Read More	From the Front Page of the LAWRENCE LOCAMOTIVE Newspaper 8-10-1917: Mrs. Mary Brockman died at her home in Lawrence on August 1, 1917, at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 5 days. The news of her death came as a shock to all as she seemed to be in comparative good health the evening before. Mary Holtfoerster (sic) was born in Westholt parish, Westphalia, Germany, on March 25, 1839, and came to America with her father, one brother and one sister, her mother having died several years before they left for this country, settling in Iowa where she was married to Martin Brockman, October 19, 1858, who preceded her in death four years. In 1880 with her husband and family she came to Nebraska where she lived on a farm 3 miles east of St. Stephens for twenty seven years, when she moved to Lawrence in 1907, where she lived until death came. In 1908 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. This union was blessed with twelve children, eight sons and four daughters: John, Barney, Henry, Fred, Joseph and Martin, of St. Stephens, August and Frank, of Nazareth, Texas, Mrs. Jos. Rempe, of Plainville, Kans., Mrs. Jos. Egghofer, Mrs. John Wiebeler and Mrs. Frank Ostdiek, all residing here. There survive sixty three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. All of the children residing here were at her bedside when death came; the three living at a distance came for the funeral. Mrs. Brockman was highly respected by all who knew her. Kind, cheerful and considerate to family, friends and neighbors, her presence cast a ray of good cheer and encouragement over all with whom she associated. Her home life was ideal. Her church affiliation was Catholic and she practiced faithfully its teachings thruout her life. Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart church in Lawrence, Saturday at 9 a.m., Rev. Chas, Becker officiating. A large concourse of relatives and friends came to pay their last respects to the departed. The remains were taken to St. Stephens, where it seemed an endless string of automobiles, carriages and buggies followed the hearse and where she was laid to rest beside her husband.
