Miss Baldwin's ashes will be interred at the Ellerbe Cemetery. Miss Baldwin was born on May 30, 1921 in the community of Covington in Richmond County. Thereafter her family moved to Ellerbe where she spent the majority of her childhood. After leaving Ellerbe High School, she majored in elementary education at Greensboro College, graduating in 1942. She began her teaching career in High Point at Johnson Street Elementary School then returned to Ellerbe where she taught kindergarten, first and third grades at Ellerbe Primary School. While her official teaching career spanned 37 years, she enjoyed teaching as a substitute for many years after retirement. She was a gifted elementary school teacher. Enriching children's lives and minds, and building their self-esteem was her life. She knew exactly how to hold even the tiniest children in rapt attention, how to inspire little minds, how to praise, and how to correct gently in a way that brought instant improvement with nary a hurt feeling. She spent hours evaluating student papers, writing little margin notes of suggestions and encouragement on each. One of Miss Baldwin's former students told the family that he has saved his third grade papers for 40 years because he treasured these little notes so much. She was a wonderful aunt. Her nieces and nephews have childhood memories that include summer visits filled with the publication of a little newspaper, plays on the front porch stage, and special dinners where using one's best table manners was sure to receive praise. There was always time in her schedule for a game of Monopoly, Chinese Checkers, Crazy Eights, or Gin Rummy. Her Christmas afternoons were filled helping the children write prompt thank-you notes. She made the greatest and least events special by introducing the perfect little song, the right little poem and a fun craft to fit the occasion. She dearly loved her village of Ellerbe and all the people in it. She tirelessly helped at community events and at the Kemp Memorial Library, the Rankin Museum and the United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her father Alfred Baldwin; her mother, Beulah White Baldwin; her brothers, Jesse A. Baldwin Sr. and Hunter E. Baldwin Sr. She is survived by her six nieces and nephews, J. Alfred Baldwin Jr., Hunter E Baldwin Jr., Janie Baldwin, Barbara B. Highfill, Rebecca B. Thiel and Susan B. Scroggs. She leaves behind 10 great-nieces and nephews and five great-great nieces and nephews. Visitation will be in the church parlor at 1 p.m. prior to the service that same day.
