She was the oldest daughter in a family of six. Her father, a soldier of the Union in the war of rebellion, died in the army when Mary was 12 years of age. In 1968 she married James McClaren Lowe at Greenfield, Iowa and in 1875 they moved to Greeley, Iowa and thence in 1897 to South Dakota, coming from that state to Bowbells (ND) in the fall of 1903. They had born to them 10 children, nine of whom survive deceased. These are Mrs. S.G. White of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Walter J. Lowe and Mrs. L.D. Butler of Bowbells and Clara, Louise, Ora, Oscar, John and Arthur, the latter three girls and three boys single and living at home. Mrs. Lowe had been a consistent member of the M.E. Church since she was 12 years old and since coming to Bowbells had endeared herself to the entire community as a kind and sympathetic neighbor, ever prominent and an indefatigable worker in all benevolent undertakings and church work, and withal a loving and indulgent wife and mother, whose sad death is mourned as well by the community as by the bereaved family, to whom all extend sincere and heartfelt sympathy. The funeral took place from the M.E. Church in this pace at 2 o'clock p.m. on Sunday last, Presiding Elder Moore delivering a most touching discourse on the unblemished life of Mrs. Lowe, and notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather the church was crowded by good people desirous of attending their love and regard for the deceased.
