Mary Augusta Smith, daughter of Henry and Mary Smith, was born September 16, 1873 at Bloomfield, Iowa and slipped quietly asleep in the Lord at the Central City Hospital on September 10, 1954 at the age of 80 years, 11 months and 24 days. Mary Augusta Smith, daughter of Henry and Mary Smith, was born September 16, 1873 at Bloomfield, Iowa and slipped quietly asleep in the Lord at the Central City Hospital on September 10, 1954 at the age of 80 years, 11 months and 24 days. She came with her parents at an early age to Nebraska and the family settled near Polk. She had made her home in this community almost 75 years. Baptized in infancy, she attended the Christian Day School of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and was confimed into the church when fourteen year of age. She was a faithful church attendant for over 70 years and at the time of her passing was the oldest member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Polk. She was a member of the Ladies Aid of the church for many years and belonged to the newly organized-Lutheran Women's Missionary League. On September 8, 1892, she was united in marriage with Ernest William Hahn and they started their wedded life in a new home northwest of Polk where they lived for 52 years. Ten years ago they retired from the farm and moved into Polk. Mr. Hahn passed away two years ago on July 18, 1952. Mrs. Hahn was a home loving person whose first concern was of her family. Her wonderful mother love included not only the rearing of her own children, but also a grandson, Lavern Hahn. She became mother to him when he was but 19 months of age. Grandma Hahn was one of those wonderful persons who radiated love and sympathetic understanding, not only to her family, but to hosts of relatives and a multitude of friends. Many call her name "Blessed." Surviving are three sons, Albert of Pasadena, Calif., Lloyd of Polk and Ervin of Cambridge, Iowa; five daughters, Mrs. Elva Lindburg and Mrs. Alice Finnell of Polk, Mrs Marie Ziegelbein and Mrs. Marjorie Nordstedt of Lincoln, and Mrs. Beatrice Kauth of Pasadena, Calif. Two brothers, John Smith of Ashton and Chas. Smith of Long Beach, Calif., also survive, as well as 25 grand children and 18 great grand children. Three sons, Victor, Harvey and Carl preceded her in death. Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at the Brauer Funeral Home and at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. C.W. Long of Brighton, Colorado, a former pastor, officiating. His text was Romans 8:28. Mrs. Maurice Lindburg of Stromsburg sang, "I Won't Have to Cross Jordan Alone", and Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Ramsey sang, "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." Pallbearers were five grandsons and a nephew; James, Dale and Maurice Lindburg, Dwayne and Dennis Hahn and Alvin Smith. Interment was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.
