GREAT GRANDMA MARY "CLARK " McKEE Written by Edna Manley LaComb daughter of Belle Manley Norman I thought I would write down a few things I can remember about our Grandparents, Joseph and Mary McKee whom I lived with one school term. I hope it will be of interest to those who didn't have the chance to know them as well. Great-Grandma McKee was born to Chas Clark and Charlotte Jennings in Sussey, England, May 29th. 1819 and died at her home in Summerfield, Kansas, May 17th,1906; age 86 years, 11 mo. and 18 days. She came with her parents to the United States in 1820 settling in Ripley Co., Indiana. At the age of 23 she married Joseph McKee. They moved to Crawford Co., Illinois, in 1873, from there to Pawnee Co., Nebraska in 1880. She had asthma so bad the doctors didn't think she would live to be 17 but she lived until nearly 87 and raised 7 children. When she was very young, she joined the Baptist Church, and I think she lived the most Christ-like life of anyone I have ever known. Her bible was her constant companion and I've seen her try to sing hymns when she would have to stop and gasp for breath, "Nearer My Home in Heaven Today Than Ever I've Been Before", was a favorite. She seemed small to me, and stooped, with blue eyes and white hair. She wore dark dresses with white collar and cuffs a lot. She taught Grandpa McKee to read and write.
