McCarty, a highly respected and pioneer resident of Bloomfield, was found dead in bed at her home north of the square, Saturday morning abuot 8 o'clock, by Mrs. H. P. Campbell. Mrs. Campbell became alarmed on not hearing anyone astir in Mrs. McCarty's bed room, and failing to get a response after rapping, opened the door and was horrified to find Mrs. McCarty cold in death. Deceased died sometime during the night and appearances indicated that she passed away without a struggle. The body was taken almost immediately to the home of a sister, Mrs. Joseph Higbee, where it remained until the funeral at the Methodist church, Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. Fred B. Tucker assisted by Rev. Robert C. Moore, pastor of the Christian church. Interment was made in the I. O. O. F. cemetery. Mary B. Lockman was born February 10, 1836, in Hendricks county, Indiana, and was 75 years, 11 months and 24 days old. At the age of twelve years she settled with her father's family on a farm near Drakesville, where she was united in marriage to Joseph McCarty, July 7, 1856. They had no children of their own but Edward Higbee, their nephew, lived with them from the time he was two years of age. Mr. McCarty died at Bloomfield June 29, 1903. Mr. McCarty was a teacher, acting as principal in the schools at Mr. Pleasant, Eldora and Bloomfield. Mrs. McCarty was also a teacher and taught for a time in the public schools in this city. Since 1875 Mr. and Mrs. McCarty lived in Bloomfield continuously. Mrs. McCarty was converted and united with the Methodis church when 16 years of age and remained a faithful christian throughout her life.
