She married on 6 November 1885, William Henry Grafe, at Muscatine, Iowa (Grafe-Brawand marriage, 3 November, 1885, in Muscatine County Marriage Record Book D, page 401), died 10 July 1940 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery ("Mrs. Mary Grafe, Lifelong County Resident, Dies", Muscatine Journal, Muscatine, Iowa, 10 July 1940). Mary could have grown up in a small Iowa farm community in Keokuk County. Probate documents gave a precise location for the 152 acre farm about ninety miles west of Muscatine, Iowa. The long list of property left for the family helped to visualize the farm: horses, cow, hogs, wagon, a set of double harness, plow, harness, single and double shovel plow, fork, hoe, shovel, spade, cultivator, hay ladder, axe, household and kitchen furniture, beds and bedding, and weaving apparel. The assets of the estate included: horses, colts, cows, wagon, saddle and bridle, set of plow harness, set of fry nets, skiff, bob sled, and an old plow. But Mary's father died when she was one year old and the farm was sold. Her mother quickly moved the family to downtown Muscatine, Iowa, population 20,699. The Grafe family inherited an old black and white picture of a young lady, Mary Brawand, sitting in front of a piano. The camera is set up on the right side of this girl, my great grandmother. The piano may be a studio prop. The wall or curtain in the background draws attention to the child. She stares at a large white book, sitting open on top of the small piano. Her beautiful long hair has been pulled up into a braid which then falls onto her back with curls at the end. It makes her look like she got dressed up for the picture. There is an earring in the child's visible ear. Her complexion is clear and her white hands rest in front of the keys as she poses for the camera. She is not playing. Her long dress appears to be a light color with white stripes down the back and white trim around the lower section. There is possible a white collar and decorative front. Her belt gathers the bulky material around her waist as the costume hides the stool or bench on which she sits. She may be wearing boots. The small piano is almost as narrow as the open book. The piano has many ornamental carvings including a dragon followed by clouds. The keyboard is supported by a bearded head in front of a small curvature that ends in a ball leading to some flowers and leaves. The support curves down to the props base which sits uneven on the floor. On the side between designs carved on all edges are four small drawers. The picture is unique among those of my ancestors, but I wonder how many little girls posed just like Mary. Mary's mother was married three times. Mary may have attended First Ward School in Muscatine under her maiden name, Mary Brawand, or Mary Eigerman, or Mary Lang. Mary and William divorced in 1897 (Muscatine County, Iowa, Muscatine District Court, No. 6570, filed 8 November 1897, Mary Grafe vs. William H. Grafe). Mary had four children and her mother living with her in 1900 ("United States Census, 1900, entry for Mary Graf)". Her daughter spoke of her as a very strong woman for raising four children on her own.
