Mary (Burke) Hoover, 82, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry Ford, south of Mt. Pleasant at 12:30 a.m. on April 29, 1940. She suffered a broken hip in a fall in March, 1939, and had been confined to her bed since that time. She had been seriously ill since Friday night, April 26th. She was born May 10, 1857, in New York, the daughter of William and Agnes (Grogan) Burke, both natives of Ireland. She, her parents, and siblings came to Henry County when she was about three or four years old. She was survived by six sons and three daughters: Paul Hoover of Hastings, Nebraska; Henry Hoover of Davenport; John Hoover, Steve Hoover, and Andy Hoover, all of near Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. Harry (Stella) Ford of Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. Al (Rose) Nelson of near Mt. Pleasant; and Mrs. Charles (Marie) Hoar of Loan Pine, California. Her husband Andrew Hoover died in 1936, and a son Frank J. Hoover died in 1928. The funeral services were held May 1st at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. Requiem mass was read by the Rev. Father M.T. Gaffney. Burial was at St. Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery.
