Read More	Highland Recorder February 24, 1922 SAD, FATAL ACCIDENT Highland county was shocked by a lamentable tragdy that occured Friday morning, resulting in the death of a young wife and mother in the eastern part of the ciunty, the victem being Mrs. James Hatcher, almost instantly killed by the accidental discharge of a shot gun in the hands of her husband. Following the receipt of the news here. County Coroner, Dr. C.B. Fox and State’s Attorney, A.L. Jones, went to the scene of the killing, the section where it occurred being known locally as “Seldom Seen". After thourough investigation and inquiry, the circumstances pointed so clearly to accidental killing that an inquest was deemed unnecessary. James Hatcher, the young husband, was the only witness to the accident, but his straight forward, frank statement seemed to leave no room for doubt as to truthfulness. Crushed and broken hearted he told how on the fatal morning, disappointed at the failure of a young neighbor boy to come and help him saw wood, he remarked to his wife that he would go fox-hunting. He walked in an adjoining room and picked up his gun. In the mean time his Wife had stepped to the window and was looking out in the direction from which the boy spoken of was expected to come. Just as he passed through the door between the two rooms, carrying the gun on or under his arm, it was discharged in some way—he could not tell how it was caused but the entire load of No. 3 shot entered his wife’s back between the shoulders. She spoke but twice, first asking him to raise her up, then to lay her down again. She died instantly, the shot passing though her body and lodging in the breast and neck. A number of neighbors were present at the time the officers made the inquiry and all testified to Hatcher’s good name & the pleasant manner in which the couple had always lived together. These witnesses included Mrs. Margaret Malcom, nearest neighbor and foster mother of Hatcher, and Mr. Lyman Siron, father of the unfortunate woman, and, in view of all that could be learned and seen, a formal inquest was dispensed with. Mrs. Hatcher was 29 years of age and the mother of four little children, all under six years of age. The remains of the unfortunate wife were laid to rest Saturday at McKendree Church. Martin Siron and wife, of Warm Springs, came home to attend the wedding of his sister, Mary, and James Hatcher. The two couples will leave for the West after the Stock Show. A nice dinner was served at the home of the bride and supper at the home of he groom. We wish them a long and happy life. September 15, 1914 James Hatcher and wife of Cooksville, ILL., are visiting Lyman Siron's family. December 4, 1914 James Hatcher and wife have gone to housekeeping on the Abe Armstrong's place April 16, 1916 Mrs. Mag Malcom is building a residence for James Hatcher, on her farm. He will move soon as it is done.
