Mary Cannaga was born in Harrison county, Ohio, Sept. 10, 1825; was married to Mr. Aden McDonough Nov. 16, 1841; moved to Iowa and settled in Mahaska county in 1830. She was the mother of thirteen children, all living, twelve of whom were at her funeral. Mrs. McDonough had been sick about seven years, when death came as a friend to release her from her long afflictions, when she calmly and resignedly yielded her spirit to her Father in Heaven, and thus passed from earth, a kind neighbor, a loving wife and mother. The large attendance at the funeral demonstrated not only the feelings and sympathy for the living members of the family, but also the high esteem in which the dead mother was held. The writer herself was called to attend the funeral, and was never more impressed with the true grandeur of a parent's death. There sat the venerable husband, his locks and beard whitened with the frosts of many winters, and twelve grown children healthy and strong, clad in the habiliments of sorrow, touched and at times overwhelmed with grief; but with all a gleam of hope lit up by the bright anticipations of all meeting their mother on the bright, ever-green shore, where "tears shall be wiped from all faces, and death swallowed in victory." Then, in charge of Mr. McCurdy, the very efficient undertaker, the covering over the glass in the coffin was removed, and that mother's face for the last time on earth was revealed to sorrowing friends, hen the family bade farewell to that once loving wife and mother. After that scene, comingled with joy and sorrow never to be forgotten, the remains were taken to the Woods cemetery near by, and in the light of a beautiful autumnal sun were laid to rest.
