Description	:	Mary Catherine ( in the 1930 Federal Census it was spelled Katherine) Darcy was born June 4, 1915 in Stephen, Marshall Co., MN. In the 1920 Federal Census the Michael Joseph Darcy family (which included Mary) was living on a farm near Davis, Kittson Co., Minnesota. This was about 10 or 12 miles north of Stephen, Mn. In the 1920 Federal Census the Michael Joseph Darcy family (which included Mary) was living on a farm near Davis, Kittson Co., Minnesota. This was about 10 or 12 miles north of Stephen, Mn. Just east of the Red River. They moved to Creighton, NE in late 1920, and lived there for about a year, Michael Joseph worked for his brother Thomas Patrick to repay him for the help Thomas Patrick had given him when he came to the USA, in 1902. They moved to Bonesteel, Gregory Co., SD, in 1921. She married Clarence Andrew Schmidtz April 14, 1936 in Gregory, Gregory Co., SD. She and Clarence were Best Man and Maid of Honor at my parents Bruce Richard Taylor and Gladys Mary Darcy's wedding on March 31, 1933. Mary Catherine Darcy Schmitz and Clarence Andrew Schmitz had 8 children: William, Robert Michael, Phyllis, Frances, Norbert, Rosemary and a twin boys Victor and Richard. Mary lost a baby (girl) in 1948, I don't think she was named. They lived on a farm near Bonesteel, SD and Fairfax, SD. When they lost the baby they were going to church in Fairfax and the infant is buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Fairfax. I remember that Aunt Mary and Clarence milked quite a few cows. They sold the milk and it was stored in a big stainless steel tank. As you probably know, un-homogenized milk separates from the cream in the milk, and the cream raises to the top. Anyway I remember that Aunt Mary used to open the milk tank and skim off cream she used in cooking. I remember Clarence complaining that this caused their butter-fat tests to go down (very good naturedly), and the milk wasn't worth as much. Aunt Mary didnt care, I remember her saying "that little dab of cream isn't going to change anything", and paid no attention to his complaint. I used to really enjoy visiting their farm. When I was teaching in Fairfax Public School I used to visit their farm on week ends, I enjoyed helping do chores. Clarence used to come to Fairfax pretty often, and have a beer in the Legion Club, The mananger of the Legion Club was Bob Pistulka a good friend of Clarence, he was a good friend of mine as well. I enjoyed meeting him there for a beer. Clarence died Sep 19, 1989. He is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Bonesteel, SD. Prior to her death Mary was quite hard of hearing. I spoke with her son Mike Schmitz in July 2008, Mike told me he is also hard of hearing. I am too, I have 2 hearing aides that I don't wear. I remember Grandpa Michael Joseph Darcy was very hard of hearing also. It must run in the family. Mary died June 26, 2009 at the Avera Rosebud Care Center in Gregory, SD. She is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Bonesteel with her husband Clarence. The Clausen Funeral Home from Burke, SD was in charge of arrangements.
