At the top of the stone, there was a carving of a hand with the index finger pointing toward heaven and a rose. The top picture is of the back of the bottom half and the front of the top half of the original stone; the second picture is of the front of the bottom half. When we found the stone, the base and bottom half of the stone were still in the ground. The top half was broken off and had sunk into the ground behind the stone. It was broken into several pieces and was very eroded and difficult to read. We dug the pieces up and cleaned them. After the pieces were cleaned, the name "MARY" was quite clear across the top. The piece containing the "C." was broken off; however, when we laid it beside the stone and stood back, it could be faintly seen. There was an inscription below that which appeared to identify who Mary was, and parts of the letters spelling HEDRICK could faintly be detected. The writing on the bottom portion of the stone still in the base was also eroded and very faint. It gave Mary’s death date as June 10, 1855 and age at death as 19Y. 2M. 10D. There was an epitaph, but it was unreadable. We were very disappointed, but there was no way we felt we could restore this stone. In the summer of 2003, we decided to purchase a new stone for Mary's grave. This was ordered from the Fuller Monument Company. The hand with the finger pointing toward heaven is no longer available, and since the original stone also had a rose on it, we selected a rose motif for the new stone. This was set in the summer of 2003. At that time, we laid the entire original stone out carefully in back of the new one and buried it, as is specified by the Association for Gravestone Studies.
