Their son was Daniel Anderson Robinson, 1858-1896, who was married to my maternal grandmother for only two years. Grandmother's parents were William Munyon and Mary Brown from Athens, Ohio. They both died on the trip west shortly after the Civil War, probably in the early l860's when my grandmother, Mary Catherine Robinson, 1860-1950, was a small child. Her older sister, [Sarah] Jane, raised her." "My grandmother Robinson was first married to Robert Rush when she was twenty. They homesteaded in Western Kansas. She had three sons, William B., Walter E. and Lowell B. They were seven, five and two years of age when her husband had a terrible accident. He was chopping wood when the axe flew off the handle and was lodged in the center of his forehead. Although he was considered 'hopelessly insane', Grandmother would not allow him to be sent to an institution. With the help of her young sons, they cared for him till his death in 1890. "Four years later, Grandmother married my grandfather, a widower with children, who had the homestead adjacent to hers. A year later my mother, Nettie Mary Robinson, (1895 - 1979), was born in a sod house. She was a year old, and Grandmother was pregnant when my mother and grandfather became ill. I believe they had Scarlet Fever. My grandfather died of complications, probably pneumonia. Now my pregnant grandmother had her children, his children, their children, two undeveloped homesteads and her Bible. "Just after her husband was buried, and before the birth of my uncle, Philip Anderson Robinson, my grandmother had a new problem. Some men in soldiers' uniforms came by to warn of an Indian uprising. The men helped get my pregnant grandmother and all the children into a wagon to escape. I don't know where they went for safety, but they learned that there was no uprising. After they returned home, they discovered that the men had stolen all their provisions. "In this area of Western Kansas where there were hot, dry winds in the summer and cold, blasts of snow in the winter, only the hardiest survived. There were very few towns, schools, churches, rivers or trees. Household fires occurred a number of times in my Grandmother's life when she lost all or part of the family's possessions. Survival was primary. Necessity made one tenacious, self-reliant, creative with very little." "My [Jonetta's] pioneer background has some common threads. The work ethic was very strong. "Every man must pull his own weight," and "A man's word is his bond," were mottos to live by. I see these beliefs in my mother [Nettie], and especially, in my grandmother [Mary], and through them, in myself. When things in my life have seemed insurmountable, I've often thought of my grandmother's life, and told myself, "I can get through this." Obituary: Mrs. Mary C. Robinson, died Monday Morning Sept 21, at Scott City Hospital after a three-months illness. She was born in Athens, Ohio, April 15, 1860. She came to Kansas as a girl and later homesteaded at Healy in 1892. After coming to Kansas she was married to Robert Rush in 1880. They were the parents of three children - William B. Rush of Dighton and Walter E. Rush and Lowell D. Rush, both deceased. Their father, Robert Rush, died in June 1890. She later married Phillip [actually Daniel] Anderson Robinson on Sept 10, 1894. They were the parents of two children, Mrs. Nettie Mahan of Wichita and Phillip A. Robinson of North Platte, Nebr. Her husband Phillip [actually Daniel] Robinson, died Nov 10, 1896. Mrs Robinson was a life-long member of the Methodist church. Mrs. Robinson is survived by her children, two step-daughters, Mrs. Essie Maecomber of Santa Monica, Calif., and Mrs. Blanche Brose of Beeler' 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Funeral services for Mrs. Robinson were at Healy Thursday afternoon.
