Debour and Lukjte Mary Sweeden, on 12 Oct 1887 in Belmond, Wright, Iowa. Mary b. 7 Jul 1859 in Ackley, Hardin, Iowa d. 17 Apr 1931 in LaMoure County, North Dakota, at age 71, and was buried in Rosholt, Roberts, South Dakota. Mary grew to womanhood in Hampton, Iowa. She purchased and operated a millinery store in Belmond where she met and married Frank. After they divorced, she took the children back to Hampton where they were very poor. Mary worked 60 hours a week in a laundry for 10 cents an hour, and the children took various jobs to contribute to the family's income. As part of the divorce settlement, Mary received title to a 160-acre parcel of their original farm in North Dakota which she rented out. It was encumbered with an $800.00 mortgage, and the rent didn't cover the mortgage payments and taxes. Rather than lose the farm, Mary took the children back to North Dakota in 1907. With her children's help, she operated the farm, raising various grains and livestock. In 1917 sons Arthur and Marvin both married, and each wanted to rent the farm from Mary. Marvin prevailed and took the farm over in the fall of that year. In the spring of 1918, Marvin decided he didn't want to farm at all, which put Mary in a quandary. Arthur had already signed a five-year rental contract on another farm, and his landlord did not release him from the contract until four years later. Compiler believes that daughter, Ethel, and her husband rented Mary's farm for a time during that interim period. In 1921, Arthur and his family took it over, and it has remained in the family. Mary never remarried. During the last year of her life, she lived with Ethel and her family in LaMoure County, North Dakota. Obituary from the Fairmount, North Dakota newspaper dated Mar 1931: Mrs. Mary Luick, a resident of LaMars township for the past thirty years passed away at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Orville Marsh, at LaMoure, North Dakota on Friday afternoon March 17th, where she had made her home the past year. Death came after several days of suffering following a paralytic stroke. During the past year Mrs Luick suffered a partial paralytic stroke from which she never fully recovered. Mary De Bour was born July 7, 1859 at Abbott, Iowa. On October 12, 1887 she was united in marriage to Frank E. Luick at Hampton, Iowa. She was reared in a Christian home and at the time of her death was a member of the M E church. She declared her perfect trust in her Savior and readiness to die. The deceased was very highly esteemed and always ready to help those in need. Mrs Luick is survived by two sons and one daughter. They are Arthur William of LaMars, Marvin Luick of Broadland, SD and Ethel M Marsh of LaMoure, N Dak and thirteen grandchildren.
