Read More	Terre Haute Saturday Spectator February 11, 1939 Mrs. Mary Denton Lee Mrs. Mary Denton Lee, who passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. I. Lawson of North Fruitridge avenue on Jan. 26, was one of the oldest pioneers of Vigo county. She was born near Youngstown, Honey Creek township, on July 7, 1843, and lived the whole of her life in this county. At that time Terre Haute was only a small village of a few buildings, nestling close to the river on which steamboats carried on the commerce of the day. During Mrs. Lee’s lifetime of nearly a hundred years, twenty men have assumed the office of President, among them Abraham Lincoln, who at the time of her birth was just beginning a career of public life, in the adjoining state of Illinois. Mrs. Lee saw the young men of Vigo county march away to four different wars, and since from each of these wars many of her acquaintances never returned, it was natural that she acquired a great aversion for war. Mrs. Lee’s father, Joseph Justus Denton, had come to Vigo county from New York state, in a covered wagon, and was one of the men who assisted in surveying and building the old National Road, known today as U. S. Highway No. 40. Her mother was Anna Miller, daughter of a Tennessee family. Mary Denton’s marriage to Zephaniah Lee occurred on Dec. 28, 1866, and the young couple went to live on a farm near Riley. Eight children were born to this union—Anna R. Lawson, Dora Drake, Frederick Lee, Edgar Lee, Harriet Dudley, Ida Easton, Frank Lee, and Charles Lee. Six children survive her, her son, Frederick, and daughter, Ida, having preceded her in death. Her husband passed away in November, 1915. She is survived by seventeen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. During the last few years of her life she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. W. I. Lawson. Surviving relatives and a host of friends feel that Mrs. Lee, after having been privileged to live nearly one hundred years in a historic and epochal era, has now solved the great mystery of death.
