Mrs. Johnson was born June 12, 1917, in Surry County to the late Edward Sparger and Emma Phillips Matthews. She was a retired beautician and a homemaker. Devon Drive, Mount Airy, wife of Mr. James Raymond Johnson, died at her home Tuesday evening, Oct. 19, 2004. Mrs. Johnson was born June 12, 1917, in Surry County to the late Edward Sparger and Emma Phillips Matthews. She was a retired beautician and a homemaker. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, the White Sulphur Springs Ladies Club and Bannertown Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, James Raymond Johnson, of the home; a stepgranddaughter, Vickie Rodrigez of Cummings, Ga.; a stepgreat-grandson, Raymond Rodrigez; a special sister-in-law, Annie Bowman of Westfield; another sister-in-law, Gladys Davis of Mount Airy; a brother-in-law, E.B. Johnson of Wayne, Mich.; a special niece, Jackie Brock of Mount Airy; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her first husband, Clyde Taylor; three sisters, Myrtle Johnson, Viva Matthews and Inez Norman; and five brothers, Roy Matthews, Sparger Matthews, Haywood Matthews, Merlin Matthews and Sammy Matthews. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at Bannertown Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Rick Jackson. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Oct. 21, at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy, where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Northern Hospice, P.O. Box 1373, Mount Airy, NC 27030 or Bannertown Baptist Church, 1834 Westfield Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
