Born June 13, 1925 in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late George and Nora (Kelley) Jolley. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Edward R. Burkey; her sister, Margaret Jane Boyd and husband Leo; and brother, George Jolley and wife Betty. Burkey June 13, 1925 - March 16, 2018 Mary E. Burkey, 92, of Cumberland, passed away Friday, March 16, 2018, at Robinwood Assisted Living. Born June 13, 1925 in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late George and Nora (Kelley) Jolley. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Edward R. Burkey; her sister, Margaret Jane Boyd and husband Leo; and brother, George Jolley and wife Betty. She was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church Parish (formerly SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church). Mrs. Burkey was employed in the family business, Burkey's Furniture, which she and her husband founded 70 years ago. During World War II she was employed as Assistant Chief Clerk with the Selective Service System in Draft Board #3 where she met her husband when he was honorably discharged from the US Marine Corp after serving in the South Pacific. When the war was winding down, she was employed as a Claims Examiner with the Department of Employment Security in the Unemployment Division. She graduated from Fort Hill High School class of 1943. She is survived by three sons, John and wife, M. Kathryn, LaVale, Danny and wife, Susan, Hagerstown, Dr. Brian and wife, Maureen, Cleveland, Ohio; five grandchildren, Stacey Stine and husband, Kevin, Hagerstown, Susanne Ford and husband, Dave, Severna Park, Stephen Ames, Frederick, David Burkey, Hagerstown, Rachel Burkey, Erie, Pa.; six great-grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew and Lauren Stine, Emily, Jacob and Mia Ford. In addition, Mrs. Burkey is survived by a special nephew, Jeff Boyd and wife, Diane, Derwood, and their children, Matt and Sean, as well as many other loving nieces and nephews. Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. is entrusted with arrangements. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Shrine of SS Peter and Paul, Cumberland, on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at 11a.m. Friends will be received at the church one hour prior to mass.
