Twogood, former resident of Grand Mound died at her home in Mt. Vernon after a long illness Thursday, Aug 6. The remains were taken to Grand Mound where the funeral was held Saturday afternoon. Mary E. Jones, daughter of John Y. and Lucy A. Jones was born near Glasgow, Barren county in southern Kentucky, October 22, 1855. Her family moved to Washington, Iowa about 1860. Later they moved to western Iowa, where she was educated in Western college. Later, she with her father taught in Western Public schools. She was married to Niles B. Twogood, Nov. 30, 1882. They established their home at Grand Mound. In 1899 they moved to Mt. Vernon. Four children were born to them, Howard of Detroit, Mich; Chancey P. who died in early childhood; Lorin J. of Cedar Rapids and Arthur P. of Newton, Iowa. Mrs. Twogood died at her home in Mt. Vernon at noon Thursday, August 6, 1931 after a severe and lingering illness. Her three sons, their wives and their three grandchildren were present. She was a woman of sterling character, devoted to her family, esteemed as a friend and neighbor. During her years of health and strength she was an active leader in the Methodist church, the Sorosis club and the Mt. Vernon chapter of the Eastern Star of which she was a charter member. Of superior intelligence she found delight in great authors and associations with cultured people. She was deeply interested in civic life and all good causes. She lived in a wonderful three-fourths of a century of American history. In her childhood her family , union people and loyal were driven under threats of death to leave Kentucky. An uncle judge there was object of a pro-slavery feud. Another uncle was called to the door of his home and shot down in cold blood. In southern Iowa her people were strong abolitionists and kept one of the principle stations of the underground railroads helping fugitive slaves to liberty. Seventy-five beautiful years now close with entrance into peace. Funeral services were conducted in the home at Mt. Vernon by her pastor, Dr. H. C. Culver, assisted by Dr. Sidney L. Chandler Saturday morning. Internment was in the family plot in the beautiful cemetery at Grand Mound. DeWitt Observer (DeWitt, Iowa), Thursday, Aug. 13, 1931, page 8, column 4.
