Chapman died, at the home of her son, Mr. George Chapman, seven miles northeast of Nevada, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Chapman, nee Sutherland. Mrs. Chapman was born October 17, 1829, in Genesee County, New York, and passed away March 18, 1905, at the ripe age of 75 years and 5 months. In 1845 she was united in marriage to Mr. Benjamin Franklin Chapman, also of New York. To them were born eight children, five of whom are still living. These are Edward, Frank and George, all of Story county, William living in California, and Mrs. Addie French, living at Primrose, Nebraska. All of these except the son in California were at the funeral. The first two or three years of the married life of Mr. and Mrs. Chapman was spent in their native state. Then they moved to Wisconsin, where they lived for over twenty years, and thence in the fall of 1869 came to Iowa. They spent that winter in Hardin county, but in the spring located in Story county, which remained their home until their death. Mr. Chapman died July 8, 1894, and since that time Mrs. Chapman has resided with her children, staying two winters with her son in California. For a number of years she has suffered from disease and at times very severely; but at the last she was free from pain, and even sat at the family table for breakfast on the day of her death. A minutes later, however, she fell into what seemed a dull heavy sleep when roused she would say she was so tired; and, in the early evening the end came. Mrs. Chapman was an earnest Christian both in her home and outside of it. She spent much time in reading the Bible, an nearly read it through during the last few months. About twenty five years ago she and her husband united with the Seventh Day Adventist church, and both remained faithful and devoted member till their death. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, March 12, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Nevada, by Elder J. O. Beard of Des Moines. Delays were caused by the extreme muddiness of the roads, and by waiting for the arrival of the train of the daughter from Nebraska. The relatives express their gratitude for the sympathy and aid of neighbors and friends.
