Willis first and Benjamin Thomas second --------------------------------------- "John Thomas, born October 16, 1751 in Virginia, came to Ohio in the early 1800's. On October 13, 1803 in Ross County, he married Catherine Putman (aka Putnam - added by CC) , born in 1769, daughter of Peter and Mary Putman (aka Putnam - added by CC) of West Virginia. John and Catherine moved to Union Township, Fayette Co, and settled on a farm along Paint Creek. To this union six children were born: Norris, Elizabeth, Benjamin, William, Abigail, and John. In 1813 there were few bridges over local streams. One night Paint Creek was swollen by rain. In the darkness Catherine was fording the stream and was drowned. Her body was recovered a short distance below the ford and was buried above the stream bed on the east side of the creek, about 100 yards south of where is now Robinson Road. John died August 10, 1831, and was laid to rest beside Catharine along Paint Creek on their homestead. Their son Benjamin was born March 20, 1808 in Fayette Co, Ohio. He remained with his parents until 15 years of age, then went to Portsmouth Ohio, where he was engaged in chopping at a salary of $8 per month. He worked at Ohio for two years then started with a drove of 360 head of hogs from Portsmouth to Richmond, Virginia, which took two months. After his return to Ohio, he was engaged in farming for six years. He then returned to the old homestead in Fayette County where he took charge of his father's farm for two years. On July 11, 1833, Benjamin married Prudence Thompson, born May 11, 1811, daughter of Francis and Minnie Templeton Thompson, who were natives of Virginia. They remained in Ohio for ten years during which time Benjamin was engaged in farming and carrying on a cooper shop. They later moved to Brown County, Illinois, where Patience died on March 13, 1851 (also recorded as March 11 - added by CC). To this union three children were born: Minerva, William and Elizabeth. On August 25, 1851, Benjamin married Mary Eggers Willis, widow of R.P. Willis and daughter of Benjamin and Lydia Eggers. Mary was born March 21, 1826. Benjamin and Mary moved to Iowa in 1856, settling first in Jefferson County and moving a few years later to Wapello County, Iowa, where they lived the rest of their lives. In 1843, Benjamin was ordained as a minister of the United Bretheren Church, he was there engaged until his health began to fail in 18?? (the date is not legible in the copy I have - added by CC). Benjamin died May 12, 1902 (though the copy could say 1903, it is 1902 that is on his tombstone - added by CC), and Mary died March 18, 1912. Each are buried at Mars Hill Cemetery in Wapello County, Iowa. To this union seven children were born: Matthew A. Mary Patience, Benjamin F, Mary Patience, Elijah Willis, Anna E, and George.
