Obituary from the Times Enterprise, Wessington, Beadle, South Dakota, Friday, December 29, 1916, p1 c5&6: "Aged Lady Passes Mrs. Mary E. Gamble passed away at the home of her son, A. C. Gamble, northwest of town last Sunday morning after a lingering illness of many months duration. For a couple of years or more she had been an invalid requiring constant care, and it is probable that death came to her as a relief after her long suffering which even the tenderest care could not wholly alleviate. Mary E. Blocher was born in Washington, Litchfield County, Connecticut October 28, 1840. At the age of five she removed with her parents to Amboy Illinois, where she resided until her marriage to Newton H. Gamble, October 5, 1865. They resided on a farm in Carrol County, Illinois, until 1868, When they moved to Benton County Iowa, and from there to Green County Iowa, in 1876. With the first great rush of homesteaders they immigrated to the Territory of Dakota in 1881, filing on a homestead near Parker where they lived for 20 years. In 1901 they purchased a farm northwest of Wessington and resided there until Mr. Gambles death in 1907. And, in fact, it has been her home most of the time since, except for short periods when visiting with her other children. She was the mother of four children, all of whom are left to mourn her loss: Bertha M. Ward of Morgan Hill, Cal. Henry E. Gamble, of Parker, S.D. Eva L. Harper, of Comstock, Wis., Arthur C. Gamble, of Wessington. Besides the children she has two brothers and one sister still living. As a young girl she united with the Presbyterian Church and always lived an earnest, consistent Christian life, taking an active interest in all church work until failing health and advancing age made it impossible for her to have her home.
