About a year before Mr. Briggs' death in 1903 Mr. and Mrs. Birggs started spending a great deal of time in southern California. After his death" Mrs. Briggs continued living in California and after some years looked upon herself as a resident of that state. She returned often for short visits with her family remaining in Iowa. Mrs. Briggs died at her home in Los Angeles June 23,1914, at the age of 69. Both Mr. and Mrs. Briggs are buried in the Briggs'lot in Nevada. Aug. 18,1891 on her 21st birthday, Lida Briggs was united in marriage to Jay G. Dutton. At the time of their marriage Mr. Dutton owned a lumber yard in Perry. The ceremony was very quietly and solemnly performed due to the death of Mr. Dutton's father on April 8,1891. The Rev. W.P. Payne officiated. For their wedding trip they spent.two weeks at Lake Minnetonka, MN and Minneapolis. Upon completion of it they took up residency in Perry. While Jay and Lida were betrothed he used to ride his bicycle, a huge front and small back wheel model, an average of once a week from Perry to Nevada. Jay G. Dutton was the son of Orson B. Dutton. He was one of ten children. Two older brothers were Orin John and 0. Ernest. Orin John purchased the Grand Junction Bank in 1886 and when he died in 1933 he had rounded out 58 years in the banking business. At the time of his death he was about 80 years old. 0 Ernest was the first banker at Manning IA. In 1881 in partnership with' his father, Orson B. Dutton, he established the Fanners and Traders Bank in Manning. He continued in business there until his retirement in 1909 when he moved to California. He died at his home in Los Angeles July 19,1929, at the age of 78. The father of O.E., Orin and Jay. Orson B. Dutton, pioneer banker, was born June 2,1825 in Hannival, Oswego County NY. When Orson was nine the family moved to Will County IL. He attained manhood there and on March 6, 1845, married Miss Lydia Chapman. Lydia Chapman Dutton died in 1856. Upon her death he came on west, to Delaware County IA where he married, Miss Elizabeth Beavers. Children born to them were Jay G., 1866-1928 Omer, who died as a young boy, and Sarah Jane, 1868-1943. Sarah Jane, called Jennie by family and friends, married Dr. Frank Conner of Nevada. Their son, Dr. John Dutton Conner, is a physician and surgeon in Nevada. Mr. and Mrs. O.B. Dutton, grandparents of Dr. John Conner, moved to Benton County IA in 1864 and finally settled in Nevada in 1870. In October of 1879 he opened the first bank in Story County and Nevada. His bank was first called the Nevada City Bank of O.B. Dutton and did business at the site of the present State Bank and Trust Co. In 1872 his son Ernest entered into the business and the cards of the bank read "The Nevada City Bank of O.B. Dutton and Son, Nevada, Story County, Iowa." By 1876 the banking interests in Nevada were upheld by the house of Dutton and Son, on the east side of Main Street and the house of Briggs, called now the Farmers Bank, on the west side of Main Street. Sometime around the year 1881, Jay and Lida Dutton began their extensive building and landscaping of the brick home they built on the west side of town. This home later became the Fantz homestead and then was purchased by the Wilson Packing Co. It is now (1958) occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Nick Kruse. In 1881 Mr. Dutton sold his bank and in 1885 he moved to Missouri Valley and again engaged in banking. His wife Elizabeth died about 1889 and he returned to Nevada failing in health to spend the remainder of his life. In February of 1891 he journeyed to Manning IA to visit his son Ernest and because of his health was unable to, return to Nevada. He died there April 8,1891. He was 66 years of age. To Jay and Lida Dutton were born two children. In 1893 a daughter Dorothy Estelle. In 1894 the family returned to Nevada where Mr. Dutton; became president of the Farmers Bank of Nevada located where the Nevada National Bank is (on 6th St.). In 1898 a son, Orson B, Dutton 2nd was born in the family home at 1204 H Ave. Dorothy died June 13,1949 in the family home after a lengthy illness. Orson and his wife Irene S. Dutton have maintained the family home, caring for his sister Dorothy until her death and for the mother Lida during her nine years of being bedfast. Lida Briggs Dutton was a woman of vast and varied interests throughout her lifetime of 87 years and 11 months. One of her chief interests was working in the philatelic world. Her personal stamp collection was both excellent and extensive. She won many awards in the country, chief amone them a Grand Prize for the entire show in New Orleans LA in 1937, and at the same tune during that show winning a First in jher Foreign Postage-General. In 1936 at the Philatelic Exhibition of that year she won first prize with her Early US Covers. Throughout their lives' together she and her daughter were always interested in fine old books, and antiques in general. ***************************************** Story Co. Wills- Book 13- page 204
