Mary Bartholf Schuyler's grandson Stephen Gould Schuyler recalled her as "a stately dowager who ruled her family with a firm but kindly hand. She brought to her marriage the traits of stern economy, rooted in her good Dutch background. She had many tricks for saving money such as rolling up old newspapers into tight cylinders and soaking them in water and then drying them to use for kindling." ( the Paterson Press) This article is an attached photo on Stephen Gould Schuyler's memorial— Stephen was her grandson. She died July 2, 1901 cause—embolism causing paralysis.
