Description	:	Mary Elizabeth (Beth) Kono was born on Monday, July 3, 1922 to Clarence and Inez (Shaw) Cowhick on their family farm six miles south of Cresbard, South Dakota. Beth attended Cresbard Public School, and graduated from Cresbard High School in 1940. Beth attended Cresbard Public School, and graduated from Cresbard High School in 1940. As a high school student she participated in many school musical activities, and was named salutatorian of her senior graduating class. After high school, Beth received her two-year teaching certificate from Northern State Teachers College in 1942, and completed her post-secondary education by obtaining her four-year Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education in 1967. Beth married Delmer Lea Kono on the Clarence Cowhick family farm on Sunday, June 21, 1942. Shortly after their marriage, Delmer was called into military service in 1942, and he went on to serve in the South Pacific during World War II. Beth made trips to Pittsburg, California and Hot Springs, Arkansas to be with Delmer during his time in the United States Army. In 1943, Beth began a career in education that spanned nearly fifty-one years with the Cresbard School District. She served as a classroom teacher for forty-six years, and as classroom aide after her retirement in 1994. It has been estimated that Beth taught as many as 1,000 students in the Cresbard Public School during her teaching career. Throughout her years in education, Beth would always enjoy visiting with her former students, with many of them fondly recalling the Little House on the Prairie books that she used to read to her classes each year. The stories of Laura Ingalls Wilder were especially close to Beth because they depicted a young girl and her family growing up on the vast prairie frontier. Beth's students and family would also comment on the many proverbs and sayings that she would often repeat such as, "Don't get the cart ahead of the horse", "Quicker than two shakes of a lamb's tail", and "Not since Hector was a pup". During her lifetime, Beth accompanied many elementary and secondary students that participated in regional music contests. Her musical talents were very useful for community special occasions such as playing piano and organ for many weddings, funerals, and community musical events in the Cresbard vicinity. She served as the sole organist for the Cresbard United Methodist Church for over twenty-five years. After Beth retired from education she took the opportunity to travel with her good friend Vera Knie of Tacoma, Washington. They journeyed to Europe in 1994 visiting England and Ireland. Throughout the years Beth would take other road trips with Herbert and Leah Cowhick to visit her nieces Lorene Veatch, Karolyn Perry, and Cindy Schaunaman. She also enjoyed traveling to Washington to visit Vera and Elmer Knie, as well as Ilene and Melvin Harris, and their daughters Sharlyn, Dolores, and Sandra. In recent years she enjoyed many trips with her family to Washington DC, Yellowstone National Park, Monument Valley, The Grand Canyon, and Minneapolis, MN. Beth loved to read many books in her lifetime, and she continuously promoted the gift of learning, adventure, and discovery to her students and family. Her daughter and sons received their post-secondary degrees and graduate degrees in elementary and secondary education from Northern State College and the University of South Dakota. They owe their lives and professional careers to her never ending belief in learning. Mary died Monday, December 31, 2007, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital. Grateful for having shared Mary's life are her three children, Nancy (Roland) Nielson, Redfield; David Kono, Aberdeen; Craig Kono, Aberdeen; three granddaughters, Anissa (Raymond) Stange, Stratford; Anita Nielson, Aberdeen; Beth Nielson, Washington, DC.; ten nieces; and four nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Inez Cowhick; her husband, Delmer in 1986; brother, Herbert Cowhick; and three nephews, Matt; Mark; and Steven Holm. The service for Mary E. Kono, 85, Cresbard will be Saturday, January 5, 2008 at Cresbard United Methodist Church with Pastor Julie Nygaard officiating. Burial will be at Cresbard Cemetery. Arrangements by Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home.
