Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Allen was born near Fresno in 1916, daughter of T. "Edgar" and "Lou" Booher Allen. They later moved to Modesto. She outlived her siblings: Lois Atkinson, Gertrude Evans, Dr. Wallace Allen of Modesto, Bernice Doern. Her uncle was Dr. Ernest Allen of Patterson. She was a drum major at Modesto High School, an avid tennis player at MJC. While there, she met both men who would become her husbands. The men never met, but were both from Lake County. Betty graduated from University of California, Berkeley, and later received her Master's Degree in Counseling from Stanford University. Throughout her lifetime, she was known for her radiant smile and zest for life. She was married to Dean Turner of Lake County in 1939. Dean and his father had a livestock business before Dean became a County Supervisor for ten years. A busy homemaker, Betty competed in the Lake County Fair where she won many blue ribbons for her canned fruit and baked goods. The family moved to Modesto in 1956 where Mrs. Turner taught P.E. for 10 years at Downey High School. Her career continued in Palo Alto High Schools. Betty and Dean later established a Hallmark Card business in Santa Clara, then retired to a new home of Dean's design in San Juan Island, WA. In 1984, widow Betty wed Derald Gibson, former Chamber of Commerce Executive of Davis, CA. Derald and Betty shared their enjoyment of world-wide travel. They were members of Centenary Methodist Church in Modesto. During her lifetime, her homes were in Lake County, Modesto, San Jose, CA; Roseburg OR; Friday Harbor, WA. She loved to entertain, garden, sew, golf, play Scrabble and cards. Later years for Betty were spent near family in the San Jose area. She is survived by her children, Carol and Richard Turner. Grand-mama also leaves three grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Remembrances in honor of Betty Gibson can be made to Upper Lake Cemetery, where she will be interred.
