Survived by two sons, Charles P. and Frank B., both of Chicago; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. — Mary Elizabeth Pennington Umstot, affectionately known and loved as "Betty" by a wide circle of friends, was a woman of brilliant intellect and sterling character inherited from a long line of distinguished ancestors. The Pennington family was founded by Sir Isaac Pennington, Lord Mayor of London, and the famous Quaker, William Penn of Philadelphia, was closely connected by blood with the American branch of the family. — Her father was William Woodward Pennington, born in Mecklinberg county, Virginia, March 11, 1808, and her mother, Maria Louise Berkshire, was born in Morgantown, West Virginia, May 15, 1826. Her mother's brother Judge Ralph Berkshire, was Chief Justice of the State of West Virginia for 38 years. — The family moved from New Albany, Indiana, where her father was a wholesame merchant for many years to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, about 1856. He was one of the founders of the Wesleyan college there, and Betty Pennington Umstot, who graduated with the class of 1860, was at the time of her death the oldest living alumnus. — During the succeeding twenty years she was actively identified with the best social and literary life of Iowa, being a natural leader by virtue of birth, breeding and education. Among her close friends at that period were such men as Senator James Harlan, a member of Lincoln's cabinet; Frank Hatton, founder of the "Burlington Hawkeye" and afterward President Arthur's Postmaster General; Judge John S. Wooson of the Federal Court at Des Moines, and many others who knew and esteemed her for her abilty and high character. — In 1885 the family moved to Chicago, where they have made their home ever since. About 1900 Betty P. Unstot became identified with the "New Thought" movement, and for a number of years was associated with Mrs. Ursula N. Gestefeld, Fannie Harley, and other leaders in the movement, as a writer, teacher and lecturer. This work brought her in contact with a very wide circle not only in Chicago, but in other cities, where her work was higly successful and made her a host of devoted friends. — The keynote of her character was courage, loyalty and the highest spiritual and mental integrity, blended with a rare unselfishness and genius for friendly service. No one who truly knew Betty P. Umstot ever questioned her supreme and uncompromising devotion to the highest ideals of duty. As a wife, mother, daughter and friend, her long and useful life was a shining example of what can be accomplished by consistent, unwavering devotion to the highest standards of conduct. — She recently expressed a wish the be cremated after death.
