Family Stories: William S. Bridges William S. Bridges was born in Rutherford County in 1860. He died in 1943 and was buried in Wall's Baptist Church Cemetery, Rutherford County. His name appeared on the U.S. census in 1900, 1910 and 1920, as living in Colfax Township. His parents are Samuel and Mary "Polly" Winn Bridges. His brothers and sisters all lived in Rutherford County. I am told that some of them were teachers. No other personal information is known. (Examine Bill Bridges' family tree tracing back to Samuel Bridges [1845-????].) Mary Elizabeth Bridges Bridges Mary Elizabeth Bridges was born Oct. 22, 1853 in Rutherford County. She died on June 5, 1937. She was buried in Wall's Baptist Church Cemetery. Her parents are Anderson and Nancy Bedford Bridges. Obviously her maiden name as well as married name was Bridges. Her parents were of English and Cherokee, or possibly Black Foot Indian descent.William and Mary Elizabeth were married November 22, 1882 in Colfax Township.Bill was red headed and of Scotch and Irish descent. His nickname was "Cussing Bill." He was a rock mason and helped build the dam at Cliffside Mill. Bill loved hunting dogs and always had several of them. He and Mary Elizabeth had a farm north of Ellenboro, NC. Bill made a great deal of their furniture. Grand-daughter Agnes remembers a huge round table with a lazy-susan in the center where Grandma would put the food. The kids loved turning it around to serve themselves.Mary Elizabeth had a grammar school education and taught school when she was needed. Most of the time she worked at home raising her seven children: Mallie, Collie, Alpha, Fanny, Beauna, Lawrence and Lois. She cooked on a wood stove as well as the open fireplace in the kitchen. She made her own soap, spun her own yarn and knitted. She had her own pump organ, which she loved to play. She was a deeply religious person and read her Bible every day. She was a member of Walls Baptist Church. In her later years Mary Elizabeth wore dark clothes and always wore an apron. She wore her hair in a bun and had small gold rimmed glasses.Children of William and Mary Elizabeth Bridges:Mallie Bridges - born October 1, 1883 in Rutherford County. She died on July 29, 1966 and was buried in Walls Baptist Church Cemetery in Rutherford, Co.. She married Housen Black. They had three children:Carl Black married Mary Freeman and they had one daughter, Laverne. Martin Black married Osteen Keeter. They had two daughters, Mary Ellen and Margaret Ann. Hoyle Black married Guynelle Newton. They had one daughter, Betty.Collie Bridges - born May 9, 1885 in Rutherford County. He died on June 11, 1954 and was buried in Walls Baptist Church Cemetery in Rutherford Co. I do not know his spouses name. They had one daughter. He was a farmer and also a prison guard. Alpha Bridges - born on Sept. 16, 1886 in Rutherford County. She died on December 9, 1960 and was buried at Sandy Plains Baptist Church Cemetery, Cleveland Co. She married Alanzo Bridges They had two children, Otha and Reno. Alanzo was a farmer. Fannie Bridges - born May 6, 1888 in Rutherford County. She died on Sept. 12, 1968 and was buried in Wall's Baptist Church Cemetery, Rutherford Co. She married Kale Bridges. They had five children: Ronald, Sam, Leon, Asia and Donna. Fannie was a homemaker and a seamstress. Kale was a farmer. They owned a large farm on the outskirts of Ellenboro. Beauna Bridges - born in Sept. 1889 in Rutherford County. She married Bealor Green. Their children were Everett, Deleree and Wynelle. Lawrence Bridges - born in Jan. 1891 in Rutherford County, NC. Lois Bridges - born August 22 1896 in Rutherford County. She married Geary Evans Moore. Their children are Agnes, Marshall, Robert and Corene. Read less
