Mary Elizabeth (Carpenter) Buck passed away September 10, 2014, at the age of 86. She was born in Vancouver, Washington on January 25, 1928 to Claude and Dola Carpenter. She grew up on a small farm in the Mill Plain area in Vancouver, Washington with her two older brothers, Royal and Percy, and her older sisters, Lucille and Lois. She had a lifetime interest in sports and played basketball, softball, and volleyball while in school. Mary earned a Bachelor of Arts at Cascade College in Portland, Oregon. Shortly after college, she worked in an orphanage in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. However, most of her working years were spent serving as secretary/treasurer of churches both in Vancouver, Washington and in Yakima, Washington. Mary married Howard Buck on May 8, 1968. The couple lived in Burlington, Washington and then Manson, Washington, where he served as pastor in the United Methodist Churches in those cities. They moved back to Vancouver, Washington when Howard retired from the ministry. He passed away in 1994. Mary is survived by three step-children, Katherine Borgfeldt, Marlene Buck and James Buck; ten nieces and nephews; five step-grandchildren; and 12 step-great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held at First United Methodist Church in Vancouver, Washington on October 4, 2014. Remembrances may be made to First United Methodist Church of Vancouver, Washington.
