Description	:	Mary Griffith was the daughter of Mary Louise McMillan and John Griffith, both originally from South Carolina. Mary's father served as Jailer and County Sheriff of Union County, North Carolina. At the time of his death, he was County Commissioner. Mary was the youngest of eight children. After the... Read More	Mary Griffith was the daughter of Mary Louise McMillan and John Griffith, both originally from South Carolina. Mary's father served as Jailer and County Sheriff of Union County, North Carolina. At the time of his death, he was County Commissioner. Mary was the youngest of eight children. She had two sisters and five brothers. During World War I, she served in the US Navy as a Yeoman (F), defined as "a petty officer in a navy, having chiefly clerical duties in the U.S. Navy". After the war, she worked as a public school teacher and lived in her parents' home until her marriage in 1924 to Archibald Karl "Archie" McLeod from Richmond County. She moved into his home in Charlotte. Archie was a lumber merchant. The attached photo of them was taken at a McLeod family event in Ellerbe, Richmond County, circa 1925-1926. Mary passed away suddenly after giving birth to a daughter who was named after her. Sadly, the baby died five months later of a respiratory infection and gastric distress. Archie remarried some years later but he had no other children. Mary and her infant daughter are buried in the John Griffith family plot in her hometown of Monroe in Union County. They share the area with Mary's parents, two brothers, one sister and her maternal grandmother. In the plot photo, Mary and daughter are located in the lower left corner (away from the fence). The large center marker reads "GRIFFITH" on its fence-facing side.
