Daughter of Charles David Ladd and Charlotte Way OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, October 13, 1921 MARY ELIZABETH UMBENHOWER Mary Elizabeth Ladd, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ladd, was born Nov. 26, 1849 in La Porte county, Ind., and died on Sunday, October 9, 1921, at her home in northeast Chariton at the age of 71 years, 10 months and 12 days. She was married on Nov. 29, 1866, to Abraham Umbenhower at Knoxville, Iowa. To this union eleven children, four daughters and seven sons, were born. Three sons and one daughter preceded her in death, two of the sons dying in infancy, Charles died at the age of 17, and Della, who died in 1914, left a family of seven children. The husband passed away Dec. 12, 1907, at the family home in Chariton. The living children are: Mrs. Sarepta Umbenhower, of Chariton; Mrs. Susie Holliday, of Russell; Willie, of Wallace, Nebr.; Otis, of Chariton; John, of Russell; Edgar, of Purdy; and Mrs. Edna Zinn, of Chariton. There are also 34 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She also leaves one brother, Allen Ladd, of California, and two half-brothers, Elmer and Elbert, of Kansas, and a half-sister, Mrs. Eliza Wharton, of Oklahoma, besides numerous other kindred and friends unnumbered. She came with her husband to Lucas county in 1869 and for over forty years she has lived in this county, the last fourteen of it in Chariton. She was converted to Christ at the age of 13 years at the Anspach schoolhouse and later joined the Liberty M. E. church in Marion county. She was a charter member of the Coal Glen church, being one of it's organizers fifty years ago. She became a member of the M. E. church in Chariton fourteen years ago, when she moved to Chariton. She always manifested an earnest Christian life, sunny and helpful. She seemed to be in good health as usual last Sunday and at 10:00 a.m. was ready to go to the tabernacle meeting when she was suddenly stricken and passed away in half an hour. She spoke distinctly and said to her children: "My time has come." The call was sudden but found her ready to go home. She had worked with Jesus almost 60 years. Funeral services were held yesterday from the home at 10:30 and at Coal Glen church at 1 p.m., by Rev. Frank Bean, assisted by Rev. E. W. Curtis and interment was made in the Coal Glen cemetery.
