Whitehurst, 88, of Garner, died Friday (May 16, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City. Marie Elizabeth Whitehurst, the daughter of Fred and Christina (MacKenzie) Larsen, was born Feb. 24, 1909, on a farm near Crystal Lake. She attended country school and then graduated from Crystal Lake High School in 1927. On March 28, 1933, she was married to John William Whitehurst at the United Methodist parsonage in Britt. They worked for various farmers in the Britt and Garner areas until 1946, when they moved east of Garner and continued farming for themselves. After John's death on Aug. 25, 1991, Marie moved to the Prairie View Apartments. She enjoyed her family, canning and traveling to Europe. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and the Garner Senior Citizens. She is survived by four sons, Richard Whitehurst and his wife, Jeanette, of Garner; Robert Whitehurst and his wife, Sandra, of Algona; Rollin Whitehurst and his wife, MaDonna, of Thief River Falls, Minn., and Reuben "Butch" Whitehurst and his wife, Terri, of Garner; five grandchildren, Lori Lynn Boyken and her husband, Danny; Richard Whitehurst; Matthew Whitehurst; Shane Whitehurst and Shelley Haugland and her husband, Mark; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Whitehurst; a granddaughter, Shannon Elizabeth Whitehurst; a grandson, Edward Allen Whitehurst; her parents; two sisters, Viola Jacobsen and Rebecca McEldowney; and two brothers, Anton Larsen and Eddie Larsen.
