Mrs. Elizabeth Guss, member of family that settled in this community many years ago and beleived to be city's second oldest resident, passed away at her residence in the east part of the city at ten o'clock Monday night. The death of the aged and highly respected resident came in the wake of an illness that began last Thanksgiving when she suffered a stroke of paralysis which kept her bedfast much of the time. She suffered another stroke last Saturday afternoon, but remained conscious until Sunday night when she passed into a coma from which she did not emerge. Mrs. Guss was born in Greensburg, Indiana in 1845. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Critser. During her girlhood her parents came to this community, which, with exception of some years when she lived in Tennessee, had since remained her place of residence. She was united in marriage to Joseph Guss of Rensselaer. Shortly after their marriage they went to Tennessee, where Mr. Guss died a few years later. He died about 45 years ago and a year later the widow returned to Rensselaer to make her home. Mrs. Guss was next to the last surviving member of the immediate Critser family, Mrs. Jacob K Sander of Woodbury, Tennessee now being the only survivor of that family. Also surviving her is an adopted son Willie Guss of Iachoocheu, Florida. She was preceeded in death by three brothers and one sister, Frank and Eli Critser of Rensselaer, William Critser of Templeton, and Mrs. William Irwin of Monon. During her early girlhood Mrs. Guss united with the Methodist church and was one of its most faithful members and active workers until ill health confined her to her home. She was a lady of lovely character, and was much beloved by all who knew her. The funeral service will be conducted from the Methodist church here at two o'clock Thrusday afternoon with the Rev. C. W. Postell in charge. Interment will be at Weston cemetery.
