Applegarth, for a third of a century an honored resident of Madrid and this community, passed away at her home in Madrid Saturday after an extended illness. Mrs. Applegarth’s maiden name was Mary E. Montgomery and she was born January 14, 1845, in Scioto county, Ohio. When three years of age her parents moved in a covered wagon to Janesville, Wisconsin, where the subject of this sketch grew to womanhood and on September 23, 1868, was united in marriage to John W. Applegarth. Mr. and Mrs. Applegarth continued to reside in Wisconsin until the spring of 1874 when they moved to Iowa and located on a farm in Garden township until last October when they purchased property in Madrid and have since made their home here. To Mr. and Mrs. Applegarth were born seven children as follows: Mrs. Elsie M. Stephenson of Boone, Mrs. G.P. Wichert of Hughson, California, Edna L., who died in infancy, Henry J. of Ceres, California, Mrs. Bert C. Ray of Madrid, Mrs. Laura A. Pies, who passed away about two years ago, Walter J. of near Polk City. The surviving children and the aged father are left to mourn. When 14 years of age Mrs. Applegarth was converted and joined the Baptist church in Janesville, Wisconsin, with which she remained identified for years. In 1875, with her husband, she united with the M.E. church in Garden Prairie, and about 24 years later identified herself with the Congregational church of the same place. Her allegiance to the Garden Prairie Congregational church remained uninterrupted until her removal to Madrid last fall. At that time Mr. and Mrs. Applegarth became members of the Christian church of Madrid. For 24 years Mrs. Applegarth was a teacher in the Garden Prairie Sunday school. Mrs. Applegarth was a woman who commanded the highest possible respect of all who knew her. She was a loving wife and mother, and a kind and obliging friend and neighbor. Funeral services over her remains were held Monday afternoon at1:30 from the house and at 2:00 o’clock from the Christian church. The service was in charge of the pastor, Rev. R. L. Lewis. A large number of the neighbors and friends of the deceased were present to pay their last tribute to the memory of the departed. The remains were laid to rest in the Fairview cemetery. ~~~~~~~~~~ Her parents were James J. Montgomery and Mary Harris. Mary's siblings include John, Martha, Sarah, James, Joseph, Emeline (on census - Emma F on headstone), Lucy, George, William Henry, Alinda Christina, Samuel Elijah, and Margaret Jane.
