Mary Elizabeth Steward was born July 18, 1906 in Des Moines, Iowa the daughter of Albert Collins and Litia Amelia (Currier) Peckham. She graduated from the Fontanelle, Iowa High School and later received her Normal Training in Atlantic, Iowa. She taught school south of Fontanelle until the time of her marriage. Steward, age 102, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Thursday, September 25, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Care Center. Mary Elizabeth Steward was born July 18, 1906 in Des Moines, Iowa the daughter of Albert Collins and Litia Amelia (Currier) Peckham. She graduated from the Fontanelle, Iowa High School and later received her Normal Training in Atlantic, Iowa. She taught school south of Fontanelle until the time of her marriage. Mary was united in marriage to Horatio Clinton Steward on June 1, 1927 in Fontanelle, Iowa. They farmed in the Avondale area and then North of Greenfield before moving to Red Oak in 1949 where they owned and operated a grocery store at 208 Valley Street. She then worked at the Arvid Almquist Feed Store where she candled eggs before going to work at the Thomas D. Murphy Calendar Company where she worked in the Roll Finishing Department. After retirement Mary and Horatio enjoyed traveling and camping. Mary also enjoyed crocheting, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary was a faithfully attended Grace Baptist Church for many years. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Horatio Steward in 1988; grandson: Jeffrey Allen Helm; and brothers: Minor, Lloyd, and Bradford Peckham. Funeral services will be 11 AM Monday, September 29, 2008 at the Grace Baptist Church with burial to be held at the Avondale Cemetery near Bridgewater, Iowa at 2 PM. Pastor Gary Walters will officiate. Visitation with the family will be held from 2-4 PM Sunday, September 28, 2008 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Grace Baptist Church or the Good Samaritan Care Center. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Contributor: Marty & Harley
