Funeral services were held last Thursday for Mrs. Elizabeth Sluka, who died at her home in Fort Atkinson, Tuesday, March 26, in St. John's church. Burial was beside her husband, who died 41 years ago. Rev. Father W.A. Dostel officiated at the church and at the grave. Although 93 years, Mrs. Sluka until a week or so before the end enjoyed fine sight, hearing and had a fine memory. She was buried in the wedding dress she wore 77 years ago, during the darkest days of the Civil War. She was mentally alert until a few days before her death and thoroughly enjoyed company and discussions. The pallbearers were Arnold Sluka, John Balk, Phil Huber, Zeno Huber, F.J.A. Huber and J.J. Kubish Jr., of Mason City. Born Mary Elizabeth Slepika at Slaveticych, Bohemia, Fe. 21, 1843, she had reached the ripe age of 97 years her last birthday. She was the daughter of Vaclav and Katherina Slepika. In 1853 she came to America with her parents first settled in Pittsburgh, then moved to Prairie du Chien and 80 years ago they came to Winneshiek county. On August 18, 1863, she was married to Joseph A. Sluka at Spillville, then just a new parish. After their marriage they settled on a farm near Ft. Atkinson. Some 20 years ago she with some children moved to Ft. Atkinson. There were 11 children, six of who. Survive her namely, Mrs. Verona Huber, John, Mrs. Emma Schreiber, Mrs. Barbara Huber, all living at Ft. Atkinson and Will and Katherine at home, who cared for the aged mother. She was a devout Catholic and died fortified by the rites of the church, administered by Father Dostal. She was a regular attendant of church. The best of care was given her by her children. It was hoped that she would round out the hundred years. Her illness was only a week. Her creed was honesty, straight forwardness and justness. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.
