She had been in poor health for some time from hardening of the arteries. However, she had not been confined to her bed and was up the day before. Her death at this time was rather unexpected. Mrs. Hammond formerly lived in Hamilton and was the widow of the late James Hammond who preceded her in death. She was 73 years of age at the time of her demise. Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church in South Milford at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. Wilde of Wolcottville, with burial in the Hamilton cemetery. ______________________________________________________ Mary Elizabeth Wilkins Hammond was born September 18, 1859, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. E. Spice, in South Milford, with whom she made her home, May 15, 1933, aged 73 years, 9 months and 15 days. She was united in marriage to James A. Hammond in 1879, who died July 18, 1895. To this union was born three children, Mrs. John McRay of Chicago, Mrs. H. E. Spice of South Milford and Clint Hammond who died a the age of 15 years. Two grandchildren, Mildred and Robert Spice, one brother, O. P. Wilkins, of Coral Gables, Florida, two sisters deceased, Mrs. Sarah Whiting and Anna who died in infancy, several nieces and nephews and many friends were left to mourn the loss of this good long life Christian woman. She lived her younger years in Hamilton, Ind., until 1907 when she moved to South Milford where she spent her remaining days. The day following Mother's Day, she lay all her burdens down on the margin of the river. She had that trait of character of scattering sunshine along the journey of life. From the first she felt sure of her children. They have not disappointed her. They have been a comfort in life and a solace when the time came for her to bid them a last farewell. You are about to take her to the home of her younger days and lay her with friends she knew and loved, and beside her dear companion. There is one and only one, Whose love will fail us never.
