The following is from an unknown source: "The funeral of Mary Elizabeth Modie, 94, native of Colfax, was at the L.L. Bruning chapel Monday morning with the Rev. Albert J. Kondy officiating. Burial followed in the Colfax cemetery. Born on a farm near Colfax Feb. 15, 1882, to William H. and Sidney Wood, she spent her early life in the Colfax community and was married to Charles Modie Dec. 24, 1902, at Colfax. They lived from 1912 to 1923 at Rupert, Idaho, and then returned to Colfax. Mr. Modie died in 1934, and she continued to reside here until 1944 when she moved to Lewiston. She was the oldest of the Oregon association of the Henkle clan and a member of the Baptist church. Mrs. Modie died May 7 at the Orchards Nursing Home in Lewiston. Surviving are three sons, Don Modie, Lewiston; Howard Modie, Powell River, B.C. and Charles (Chuck) Modie, Cle Elum (WA), seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren." The following is from the Lewiston Morning Tribune, (Lewiston, ID) Sunday, May 9, 1976: "Mary Elizabeth Modie passes at 94. Mary Elizabeth Modie, a Colfax native and resident of Lewiston for more that 30 years, died Friday at the Orchards Nursing Home. She was 94. Mrs. Modie came to Lewiston in 1944 to live with her son, Donald L. Modie, 105 17th Ave. She had been a resident of the nursing home since 1974. She was born Feb. 15, 1882, on a farm near Colfax, the daughter of William H. and Sidney Wood, a pioneer family in the area. Her parents had come to Colfax in 1875, before the railroad, and had crossed the plains by wagon train in 1853. Mrs. Modie grew up and attended schools at Colfax and married Charles W. Modie there on Dec. 24, 1902. The Modies farmed at Colfax until 1912, when they moved to southern Idaho and homesteaded in the Rupert area for 11 years. They returned to Colfax to farm in 1923. Modie died in 1934. Mrs. Modie was the Eldest of the Oregon Assn. of the Henkle Clan and a member of the Baptist church. Survivors in addition to her son at Lewiston are two other sons, Howard of Powell River, B.C., Canada, and Charles of Cle Elum, Wash., seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bruning's Chapel, Colfax, with the Rev. Albert J. Kondy officiating. Burial will be at the Colfax Cemetery." Contributed by Lee Merklin
