WAS LOVED PIONEER WOMAN Mrs. Mary Ellen Parkhurst, 85 years old, died at 12:35 a.m. today in the home of her son, D.M. Parkhurst, 1314 First avenue. She was ill only about twelve hours, having been afflicted early Monday afternoon. Her death was due to pneumonia. Mrs. Parkhurst had lived the three years just past with her son in this city. Previous to that time she lived with her other son, George J. Parkhurst, in Chicago. She formerly lived in Marion, having come to that place in 1850 and having residing there until 1893. She was born in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. Worked for Red Cross. She was an ardent worker for the Red Cross, and probably had done as much for the local branch of the organization as any other woman of her age. Mrs. Parkhurst spent most of her time at knitting, and she gave the last pair of socks which she knitted to her son, George Parkhurst, Monday morning, telling him to take them to the Red Cross shop. Having suffered a fall about two years ago, which caused an injury to her hip, she was obliged to go about in a wheel chair. Since that time her son, George Parkhurst, has been a faithful attendant to her and has spent much time giving aid to her. Mrs. Parkhurst was a member of the Congregational church, and during her younger years she had been active in church work. She was a member of no other organizations, devoting the late years of her life to the making of a home for her sons. Through her many years of residence in Marion previous to her having moved to Chicago, she enjoyed a large acquaintanceship in Linn county. Mrs. Parkhurst's husband, Henry Parkhurst, died in 1870. She is survived by her two sons, D.M. Parkhurst, 1314 First avenue, and George J. Parkhurst, who lived in Chicago, but who has been here aiding in his mother's comfort for about the past year. A sister, Miss Elizabeth Elliott, lives in Chicago, but she is in Cedar Rapids at the present time. Funeral services will be held in the home, 1314 First avenue, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, the Rev. A.M. Jayne officiating. Burial will be in Oak Shade cemetery at Marion.
