Description	:	SMITHLAND, Iowa -- Mary Ellen Servis, 90, of Smithland passed away Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness. Memorial services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Smithland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial was in Little Sioux Township Cemetery. Mary Ellen Servis was born on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 1918, on her parent's farm west of Anthon, Iowa, to Albert and Birdie (Miller) Gilman. Mary Ellen was the youngest of four children. Mary Ellen Servis was born on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 1918, on her parent's farm west of Anthon, Iowa, to Albert and Birdie (Miller) Gilman. Mary Ellen was the youngest of four children. She attended the Anthon Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1937. On June 21, 1938, she was united in marriage to Calvin Servis at The Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. Mary Ellen was an active member of the Smithland United Methodist Church, a member of the Anthon Eastern Star and Smithland Legion Auxiliary. She was an avid reader who enjoyed living in her home up until the last week of her life. Mary Ellen will always be remembered for her keen memory. She loved her time with her family and her many friends, who looked after her in later years. Survivors include two sons, Richard (Renae) Servis of Wichita, Kan., and Gary (Merydith) of Waldo, Wis.; three grandchildren, Scott (Kay) Servis of Wichita, Monica (Bobby) Watkins of Smithland, and Carrie (Jay) Schubring of Milwaukee, Wis.; seven great-grandchildren, Madison and Ashley Servis; Milayshia, Mitaiya, Bobby Jr., Trinity and Mia Watkins; several nieces and nephews; along with many special friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cal; two brothers, De Rue and William Gilman; and one sister, Doris Hall.
