On January 19, 1865, she was married to Platt Hull Hasting of Lovington, Ill. They lived on a farm near Lovington until 1877, when they moved to Kansas to make their home. They resided at Topeka until March of 1904 when they moved to Kelso on a farm and stayed until 1919 when they retired to the little town of Kelso, where Mr. Hasting passed away on April 24, 1921. Mrs. Hasting then lived alone, but sickness and affliction overcame her and since May 1926 she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. H. M. Price* of Dunlap and son W. H. Hasting** of Council Grove, where she passed away on October 24, 1926, at the age of 79 years, 7 months and 2 days. To this union were born 16 children, 10 of whom are living, six having died in infancy. She leaves six sons, four daughters, twenty-eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and two brothers to mourn her loss. When a child Mrs. Hasting was baptized and received into the Christian church at Circleville, Ohio, and has lived an honest and industrious life. She had a great affection for her neighbors and was much respected by them. Her funeral was conducted by Rev. E. R. Ames at the Christian church, six sons acting as pallbearers. Mary Ellen Grindol Hasting after her husband, Platt Hull Hasting's death, in 1921, remained alone in Kelso, KS until May of 1926 when sickness and affliction overcame her. She went to live with her daughter, Anna Price, in Dunlap, Illinois. Awhile later she return to Kansas to live with her son, William Hull Hastings, at Council Grove, Kansas. Here she died, October 26, 1926, aged 80 years, 7 months and 4 days. She had lived a full, honest and industrious life. She had a great affection for her neighbors and was much respected by them. Her funeral was conducted by Rev. E. R. Ames at the Christian Church of Council Grove. Six sons acted as pall bearers. Burial was beside her husband in the Greenwood Cemetery, Council Grove, KS . . . Walter H will leave during the afternoon for his home in Scranton. One day on our pioneer homestead (where our taxes the first year were 47 cents) one of the four small children became very ill suddenly. When Father saw the red flag, he rushed to the house and strted on horseback for the doctor. He was gone nearly all day. When Father and the doctor got back, the baby had been dead for six hours. My mother felt so alone in a strange land that day as she sat by the body of the baby. Such were the ways of our pioneer trails were blazed.
