(Source: Illinois Marriage Index) ======================= The Juniata Herald (Juniata, NE), Wednesday, June 9, 1915; pg. 5 OBITUARY MARY ELLEN PHELPS, wife of the late Clarkson F. Orvis, was born in Princeton, Illinois, December 26, 1847. She died at her home in Dubuque, Iowa, May 31, 1915. She was united in marriage to Clarkson Finney Orvis, August 30, 1871, at Atlanta, Illinois. To this union nine children were born, eight of whom are living, one son having died in infancy. The deceased has been a devoted Christian and a worker In the Church and Sunday School since the age of 14, when she united with the Congregational Church, with which Church she has always since been affiliated. In the spring of the year 1876 aha went with her husband and two small children to begin pioneer life on a ranch in Adams county (sic), Nebraska. For twenty-four years they took a leading part In the development of that new country and they always exerted an influence for righteousness and put in practice high christian ideals of life. In the early years they drove long distance! to attend Church and Sunday School. Later they were able to help in starting a church nearer home. They ware always loyal in their support of every good work in the way of building up churches and schools and in all efforts for the civic welfare. In 1900 they came to Dubuque and since then the family residence has been on Pennsylvania Avenue west of the city. Mrs. Orvis was a member of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. From the time that society was first organized she took an active interest in its development in the growth of the temperance movement throughout the world. She counted it an honor to wear the white ribbon badge. She was also a member of the Shiloh Circle of the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic. All her life she had a loyal regard for the true welfare of her country. In the Guild. the Missionary Society of Summit Church, she was able to be great help and inspiration because of her own personal interest in missions. She leaves a brother, David S. Phelps, Bladen, Nebraska, and two sisters, Mrs. John B. Campbell of Hastings, Nebraska, and Miss Emma J. Phelps of Elmira, Oregon. Her husband was taken away after a brief attack of pneumonia a little over a year ago. The children left to mourn her decease are: Mrs. M.B. Haines, of Lincoln, Nebraska; Susan Wealthy, a missionary of the American Board at Talas-Cesarea, Turkey; Harriet Ann, a registered nurse of Dubuque, Iowa; Mrs. Frank L. Gibbs, of Earlville, Iowa; Mrs. Edward T. Anderson of Platte, South Dakota; Mrs. Annaberd Wilson of Dubuque, Iowa; John Gurney of Dubuque, Iowa; Clarkson Frederick, of Gilman, Wisconsin. She has been first of all, a devoted mother and a lover of her home. Her children rise up to call her blessed. Services were held at the Summit Congregational church (sic) on Tuesday, at 2 p. m., Dubuque, Iowa, after which the remains were brought to Juniata where services were conducted in the Methodist church on Thursday, at 10:30 a. m. by Rev. Clark, assisted by Rev. Foutch. Interment was made in the cemetery west of Juniata.
