Obituary Mrs. Mary Pottenger Murphy Some lives are really great whose greatness is not known to the world at large. Such was that of Mrs. Mary Pottenger Murphy, who passed away last Monday evening at her home at 1564 West Second street. Mrs. Murphy was a native of this state, born near Seven Mile, O., August 7, 1843. Her education was secured at Antioch college during the war, under the instruction of the well known Horace Mann. On October 14, 1864 [NOTE: court records state 1863], she married Edmund Murphy, then a farmer living near Middletown. Four children were born to them, of whom three survive: Dr. Frank W. Murphy, of Dayton; Mrs. W. H. Weller, of Cincinnati and Harry C. Murphy has been living in Dayton about ten years. The home was one of great happiness. Her life was one of absolute unselfishness and exemplary Christian conduct. Modest and unpretentious, she lived as nearly a Christ-like life as it is possible to but few to live. She was a member of the Baptist church. She died after a short illness of typhoid fever. From the inception of the disease, she seemed to have a premonition that death was near. The funeral will occur at the family residence at 9 o'clock this morning under the charge of Rev. H. P. Whidden of the First Baptist church. The body will be buried in the family cemetery near the old home at Miltonville, Butler County, Ohio. Six of the former school boy friends of her son Harry, will act as pallbearers. In addition to the children linked below, Mary and Edmund had a daughter, Lillian Francinia (Murphy) Weller, b. 03 Mar 1873 in Dixon Twp, Preble Cnty, Ohio, d. 14 Nov 1957 in Santa Monica, LA, Calif., married William Harry Weller abt. 1898-99. Lillian is reportedly buried in Glendale, Los Angeles, Calif.
