She was born Mary Ellen Smith on January 18, 1923, to Dwight Bruce and Blanche Irene (Boston) Smith in Leavenworth. Read More	Mary Ellen Betz Harriman, 85, a well-known resident of Peshastin for the past 72 years, died Sunday morning, August 17, 2008, in the University of Washington Hospital in Seattle. She was born Mary Ellen Smith on January 18, 1923, to Dwight Bruce and Blanche Irene (Boston) Smith in Leavenworth. She grew up on the Homestead Ranch on Peshastin Creek, where the family owned and operated the Skookum Dairy. In high school, she was active in school functions and was Editor of the school newspaper. Following her graduation from Peshastin High School in 1941, she moved to Seattle to attend college and was employed by an office business in the Smith Tower Building. On November 2, 1942, she married Eddie Betz at Wenatchee and they made their home on the family dairy on Peshastin Creek. Mary Ellen taught skiing at Leavenworth and also played on the YMCA Volleyball Team. Following her husband's death in 1961, she continued to manage the dairy for the next six years. On November 18, 1968, she married A. Stanley Harriman at Peshastin and following their marriage, they moved to Omak to make their home. In Omak, they continued to operate the dairy farm that Stan had established, the Meadowmoore Dairy, from 1968, until their retirement in 1979. In 1981, they returned to the Peshastin Creek Homestead, where they made their home. Mary Ellen loved playing bridge, with her involvement in three different bridge clubs. She took great pride in her gardening and caring for her rose garden, enjoyed her bird feeders and, for Mary Ellen, there wasn't a critter she didn't like. During her high school years, she, along with her brother, John, hiked all over the Cascades and High Lakes and she continued to enjoy hiking in the mountains. Together with her husband, Stan, they spent a lot of time at their cabin, Eagle Ranch, near Chilcotin Lake, B.C., Canada. She loved knitting afghans and making quilts for her grandchildren and others. Mary Ellen was a member of the Chumstick Roving Grangers Travel Club, the Wenatchee Kennel Club and N.W. Independent Dairies Association. She volunteered at the Peshastin Library and also at the Peshastin Elementary School, where she participated in the reading program and was a very stanch supporter of all the Sports programs in the Cascade School District. She is survived by her husband, Stan Harriman of the family home; daughter and son-in-law, Geri and Dave Freimuth of Wenatchee; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Noreen Betz of Peshastin; step-daughter, Jan and Dennis Schuerman of Mead, WA; two step-sons, Kim Harriman and Kassie Pruitt of Tonasket and Jeff and Margaret Harriman of St. Mary's, ID; brother, John B. and Bernice Smith of Peshastin; three sisters, Verna Kiehn of Peshastin, Susie and Don Waddle of Burns Lake, B.C., Canada and Flossie Betz Zanol of Wenatchee; 14 grandchildren, Pat, Chris, Jon and Dan Betz, Mike and Ryan Freimuth, Alex and Nick Schuerman and Staci Hazelbaker, Elizabeth Oliver, Brad and Rocky Harriman, Maria Arrico and Matt Harriman; also 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Eddie Betz. A Gathering of family and friends will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday afternoon, August 22, 2008, in the Ward's Funeral Chapel. Concluding Service and Interment will be in the Peshastin Cemetery. Those who wish, may make a memorial in her name to the Cascade Booster Club or the Peshastin Library. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
