Reed, with whom she had been visiting last week. Mrs. Conover was the oldest daughter of Garret and Catherine Van Kirk. She was born in Marlboro Township December 22, 1864, but the family soon moved to Matawan where she grew up and from where she was married October 6, 1881 to Mr. Conover. Conover, died suddenly Sunday evening at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Samuel E. Reed, with whom she had been visiting last week. Mrs. Conover was the oldest daughter of Garret and Catherine Van Kirk. She was born in Marlboro Township December 22, 1864, but the family soon moved to Matawan where she grew up and from where she was married October 6, 1881 to Mr. Conover. After her marriage she made her home in Englishtown where their 3 children were born. Mr. Conover died in June of 1916. While in Englishtown she joined the Daughters of Liberty and always kept her membership. In Feb 1917 her oldest daughter, Sadie J., Mrs. W. W. Hobrough, died and Mrs. Conover returned to Matawan to make a home for Mr. Hobrough and Dorothy, who was then a small child. She took up her activity again in the life of the town, especially that of the Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member, and the Matawan Women's Club. She was chairman of the Civic Department for two years. She was well known throughout the community for her kindness and loving care. Wherever there was sickness she was the first to be called upon and always responded willingly. After the marriage of her granddaughter, she made her home with her children. For the past year she had been in poor health with heart trouble at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. Bradford Brown, in Woodcliff, but she had improved greatly and had been able to spend the summer with her son, Dr. Robert Conover, in Trenton, until he left a week ago Sunday for a vacation trip. Mrs. Conover had never been to the new home of her granddaughter in Long Branch and was anxious to visit her. She had been there just a week when she was taken suddenly in the late afternoon with a stroke of apoplexy. She died the same night. Many friends attended her funeral services Wed afternoon at the home of her sister, Mrs. William L. Van Brunt. The services were conducted by Rev. E. J. Reed of South Amboy, father of her grandson-in-law, and a neighbor and friend of many years. Two of her favorite selections were sung by Mrs. W. W. Hobrough, Mrs. Conover Burlew, Francis F. Simpson and H. M. Munson. A very large tribute of flowers was a silent token of the high insteem in which she was held. Burial was in the family plot in Manalapan Cemetery. She leaves, besides her two children, 5 grandchildren -- Mrs. Reed, daughter of Sadie; Vivian Lois and C. Bradford, children of Matilda; and Roberta Helen and Ruth Eleanor, children of Robert; and a great granddaughter, Barbara Eleanor, daughter of Mrs. Reed; also a sister, Mrs. Van Brunt and two brothers, Thomas Van Kirk of Metuchen and John Van Kirk of Bradley Beach.
