Read More	The Hagerstown (IN) Exponent, Thursday, May 21, 1908 "DEATH OF MRS DILLING Mrs. Ella Dilling, wife of Elder Levi Dilling, passed away at her home southwest of town, Friday evening, at 8:30 o'clock, after a protracted illness. Death came as a relief after weeks of untold suffering. Mr. Dilling bore her sickness with unwonted patience, and was always hopeful of recovery, although she did not fear death. She sank into unconsciousness a few hours before her death and passed quietly away. Dr. N. F. Canaday and Dr. E. H. Thurston held a portmortem examination, Saturday, which revealed what had been previously diagnosed, general tuberculosis--all of the organs being affected. Mrs. Dilling was held in high esteem by all who knew her. Her life was characterized by quiet deeds of loving kindness. She was devoted to her family and to all others near and dear to her. She was a devout member of the German Baptist church, and aided in all ways she could in relieving the distressed and in giving of her means to the poor. The funeral services were held at the Brick church, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, when Elder Lewis Teeter delivered the funeral oration, the text taken from Mark 14th chapter and 8th verse--'She hath done what she could.' Elders Abram Bowman, D.E. Bowman, John Bowman and Frank Hay assisted in the services. The following beautiful songs were rendered, forming a part of the funeral rites: 'Jesus, Lover of My Soul,' 'Rock of Ages,' 'Passing through the Gate,' 'Going Down the Valley,' 'Sleep Till that Morning,' 'Home of the Soul' and "Sister, Thou Wast Mild and Lovely.' The pallbearers were Harrison Johnsonbaugh, Frank Bowers, Charles Miller, Abraham Holler, Amos Ellabarger and Daniel Brenamen. Interment was made in the church cemetery. The funeral services were largely attended, among those from a distance being Mr. and Mrs. Everett Wimmer, of Dublin, Mr. and Mrs. Cassius Shuck, of New Lisbon, Miss Bessie Shuck, of New Lisbon, Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Lawson, of New Castle, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Funk, of East Germantown, Mr. and Mrs. Tobias Funk, of Greensfork, Mr.and Mrs. John Jobe, of Connersville, Miss Minnie Long, of Greensfork and Mrs. Sarah Kinsey, of New Castle. The following biographical sketch of the deceased was read at the services by Elder Teeter: OBITUARY Mary Ellen, daughter of Lemuel and Mary Widows, was born on the John Allen farm, about two miles west of Greensfork, Ind., Sept. 16, 1860, and died at her home, two miles southwest of Hagerstown, Ind., May 15, 1908, aged 47 years, 7 months and 29 days. At abut six years of age, her mother died, leaving her father with five daughters, she being the middle one. Homes were soon found for them, she being taken into the motherly care of Mrs. Mahala Huffman, and by her was reared to womanhood as her own daughter. About seven years after her mother's death, her father died. In May 1876, she joined the Brethren Church, of which she ever lived a faithful, consistent, and devoted member. On March 19, 1885, she was married to Levi S. Dilling, with whom she lived a happy and successful life, and to whom she always prayed to be a true helpmate. She was regularly installed with her husband, into the office of Deacon, in August 1885; of the ministery, in August 1887, of the Eldership, in September 1907. To them were born four children; one,--a son, died in infancy. One son,--Ivan, and two daughters, May and Bertha survive their mother. Our departed sister was known, during her entire Christian life, a a persevering, industrious, church worker. She was a proficient Sunday School teacher many years, first of juvenile classes, and last, of a senior class. Besides her public church work, she did not neglect church work in her home. She was never strong physically. For quite a number of years she had failing health. In October last, at her request, the Holy Anointing of James 5:14, was duly administered to her, greatly to her encouragement and comfort. Although she greatly desired to get well, and remain with, and give more of her life for her family, yet she willingly submitted tot he Lord's way. In conversation with her sister Amanda, a few days ago, she said: 'Tell the children to be good.' Truly she will be missed, not only in the home but also in the Sunday School and church work. Besides her children, she leaves her devoted husband, two sisters, Mariam and Amanda Widows, her foster mother and daughter, to mourn her departure."
