Mary Eloise Shepherd was born near Colo, Iowa, Dec. 23, 1897 and passed from this life at Des Moines Aug. 21, 1915, aged 17 years, 7 months and 28 days. She was a bright, attractive girl and her kindly disposition made her a favorite with the older people as well as those of her own age. Soon after her sixteenth birthday she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and united with the M. E. church. Her life was in harmony with her profession and she was always faithful in attendance at the Sunday School, the Epworth League and in the church choir, unless prevented by sickness. She was one of the first to be presented with a gold pin by the Sunday School as a reward for regular attendance for one year. She was good student and would have finished High School with the class of 1916. About six years ago she underwent an operation for Mastoid abcess at the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, but never fully recovered from the operation. During the past month the pain became more severe and she was again placed in the hands of a specialist for treatment, staying at 2028 Clark St., Des Moines where she passed away. While all knew her condition was serious, hope for her recovery was not abandoned until Friday afternoon. Her father, mother and aunt Mrs. H. A. Dayton were constantly at her bedside during her last hours, but she was unconscious for about eighteen hours before the end came. She leaves to mourn her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Shepherd, one brother, Roy, besides numerous other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held in the M. E. church Monday afternoon at two o'clock conducted by her pastor, Rev. G. H. Johnson assisted by Rev. W. C. McKinley of the Colo U. E. church and Rev. J. M. Bamford of Zearing. She was laid to rest beside her only sister in the Colo Cemetery. Her uncle I. M. Lhommedieu of Boone was the only relative from a distance present at the funeral. Heartfelt sympathy is extended to the bereaved family by the entire community. Card of Thanks Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Shepherd and son Roy desire to thank their many friends for the kindness and sympathy shown during their recent bereavement, and for the beautiful flowers.
