Eloise is survived by several cousins and the Marvin Jacobs family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin on August 21, 1998. Mary Eloise Sutherland was born, August 9, 1914 in Scotch Grove Township, Jones County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Frank and Blanche Clark Sutherland. Eloise attended the Center Junction Community Schools where she graduated with the class of 1932. She went on to attend Lenox College in Hopkinton, Iowa graduating in 1934. Eloise taught in the Scotch Grove Township schools for several years. She continued her education at Iowa State University at Ames graduating in 1939 with a bachelors' degree. She then taught high school at Buena Vista College. Eloise enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1943 during WWII. In 1947 she returned to the Scotch Grove Community and on November 23, 1948 Mary Eloise Sutherland and Edwin H. Helgens were married at the Scotch Grove Presbyterian Church. The couple farmed in the Scotch Grove area. Years after their extensive travel Eloise could trace with amazing accuracy exact geographical routes in her head and specific details from every trip in the U.S., Europe and Asia. In 1970 they started going to Venture Out in Mesa Arizona for the winter and in later years became full time residents of Mesa. Edwin died in 1998. Eloise was an extremely intelligent woman of independent and definite opinions who was fortunate to retain her mental acuity until the end of her life. Her ninety four years spanned the social and cultural changes of the twentieth century and she followed them with zeal. Proud of her service to her country, she still carried her Marine Corps discharge card in her wallet at her death. She remained loyal to her Christian faith and to the potential for goodness inherent in her country's founding ideals. Even though she was a longtime resident of Mesa, she never forgot her Scotch Grove, Iowa roots. With the sale of her ancestral Sutherland farm ground near Scotch Grove this past year Eloise donated in excess of 1 million dollars to the construction of the new Jones Regional Medical Center. With her strong belief in education she earmarked one hundred thousand dollars to the Monticello School Foundation from her estate. NOTE: She was listed on her marriage application as Mary Eloise Sutherland and also listed the same way in the 1920 and 1930 Censuses.
